SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Dartmouth women's rowing team competed in the first annual Doc Hosea Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
The event – which featured Minnesota, Cornell, UMass and Navy on Saturday and Syracuse, Minnesota, Navy and Northeastern on Sunday – honored Tim Hosea, MD, who served for many years as the USRowing team doctor and passed away unexpectedly last year.
Dartmouth's best finishes on Saturday were in the second Varsity 8+ (7:09.84) and the Varsity 4+ (7:51.71), where it took second out of five teams both times. In the second Varsity 8+, the Green were nine seconds out of Minnesota in first, while they were just seven behind the Gophers in the Varsity 4+.
In the other three events on that first day of competition, Dartmouth placed fifth in the Varsity 8+ (7:30.44), third in the second Varsity 4+ and second in the third Varsity 8+ (7:28.57).
On Sunday, the Big Green finished in the middle of the pack in two races throughout the day. In the first event, the Varsity 8+, Dartmouth were third (6:49.97), finishing less than three seconds behind Minnesota, but almost seven seconds ahead of Navy.
It was the same story in the Varsity 4+ when Dartmouth took third (7:53.15), leaving eight seconds between it and Northeastern and Navy in fourth and fifth. In the second Varsity 8+, the Green were fifth (7:11.22) and, in the second Varsity 4+, they placed third (8:13.57).
Next Saturday, April 9, Dartmouth will head to Derby, Connecticut, to face Yale and Boston University.
