WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to Wake Forest for its first loss of the season in the first game of the Deacon Challenge Tournament on Friday evening.
The loss drops the Big Green to 2-1-0 on the year, while the Demon Deacons improve to 5-0-0.
Dartmouth had its chances in the game, but could not put one past Wake Forest's goaltender. On the other end of the pitch, Big Green goalkeeper, Casey Cousineau made eight saves. Dartmouth head coach Ron Rainey said the Demon Deacons did a solid job possessing the ball throughout the match.
“Wake Forest is a good team,” Rainey said. “They're a good team from a great league and I thought we played hard and had a good game plan. We worked really hard defensively and had a couple good chances offensively, we thought that's how the game was going to look. Overall I'm proud of the group and we want to build off of this and get better for Sunday.”
In the first half, Dartmouth nearly capitalized on its best scoring chance of the contest, but its shot missed the right goalpost by inches. Toward the end of the period, the Demon Deacons broke the stalemate when Peyton Perea fired a shot from 20 yards out that sailed high over Cousineau's head for the score.
After the halftime break the team's returned to field where Wake Forest continued to put pressure on the Big Green defense with 11 shots in the second frame alone.
Despite being outshot, Dartmouth did not surrender any additional goals to its ACC foe.
“We saw our defense under duress tonight, Rainey said. “I think they stepped up and played quite well and if that's something we can carry through the whole year; I think that will help us in games where we are taking a lot of defensive pressure.”
The Big Green return to action on Sunday for its second match of the Deacon Challenge Tournament when Dartmouth takes on Gardner Webb at 11:30 a.m.
