BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Junior
Brendan Barry put on a long-distance clinic at the SSE Arena Belfast on Friday evening, drilling seven 3-pointers as Dartmouth sank a total of 17 from the perimeter to defeat Albany, 91-77, in the consolation game of the Samson Division of the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic. Barry finished the game with 25 points for the Big Green (4-4), while junior
James Foye and sophomore
Chris Knight both set career highs with 20 points apiece.
The Great Dane (2-6) had two players top 20 points in Cameron Healy (24) and Ahmad Clark (23), but they could not keep up with the numerous Dartmouth long balls.
Barry, the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point percentage, finished the night with 25 points — one shy of his career high — by hitting 9-of-13 overall and 7-of-11 from behind the arc. Foye likewise did most of his damage from downtown, canning 5-of-6 treys and 6-of-9 overall, and Knight, a 6-7 forward, hit his lone 3-point try and 7-of-10 from the floor to go with 5-of-6 at the foul line to account for his 20 points.
As a team, the Big Green shot over 50 percent from deep (17-of-33, .515) and on all field goals (30-of-57, .526), while dishing out 21 assists — their most against a Division I team since handing out 24 at Notre Dame last year — six from junior
Ian Sistare, five from Barry and four more from Foye. Dartmouth also won the battle on the glass with 37 rebounds, led by sophomore
Adrease Jackson with a season-high 10 boards.
The Green wasted little time in establishing their hot hand as Jackson got the fireworks started with a triple on Dartmouth's first shot of the game and never trailed as Barry rained down his first attempt on the next possession. Knight took over for the next three minutes, tallying eight straight points for a 14-9 lead five minutes in.
Knight's last bucket started a 17-0 run for the Big Green as the 3-pointers started to come more quickly. Foye and junior
Will Emery hit long balls, followed by Barry and Foye again before Knight capped the four-minute outburst with three points the traditional way, and suddenly Dartmouth sported a 20-point lead at 29-9.
Barry sparked a 10-point run with consecutive trifectas, and ended the spurt by driving to the rim for a deuce to give the Green their largest lead of the night (28 points) at 43-15 with nearly seven minutes remaining in the half.
Albany matched Dartmouth's 10-point run and raised it by two with Clark and Healy providing 10 of the 12 points. But of course the Big Green responded with more long-range bombs as Sistare and Foye added the last two of the opening half, giving Dartmouth 11 triples and a 17-point lead at the intermission, 49-32.
In the second half, the Big Green continued to keep the Great Danes at more than arm's length as Albany never got closer than 14. One instance came with 17:54 to play on a Healy jumper, so freshman
Taurus Samuels added his name to the 3-point ledger before Barry rattled off two more for a 64-43 lead.
Foye provided eight straight Dartmouth points on two free throws sandwiched between his last two treys for an 82-60 advantage with 7:34 left, and Barry hit his final long ball two minutes later. Samuels twice drove to the rim in the final minutes to post the final Big Green buckets and boost them above 90 points on the night.
Dartmouth returns to the United States to start a four-game home stand on Wednesday against Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Eric Berry and Dave Faucher calling the action, and fans can also listen over the airwaves or online to Brett Franklin and Bill Murphy on KOOL FM — and koolnh.com.
Notes: The Big Green have not had three teammates score 20 or more points in one game in at least 21 years … the 17 3-pointers are the second-most ever for Dartmouth against a Division I opponent, one shy of the 18 the Green hit on Jan. 20, 2001, coincidentally against Albany as well … Dartmouth's school record for 3-pointers in a game is 22, set in the season opener against Newbury College … the Big Green will play the Great Danes again in a regularly scheduled non-conference game at Albany on Dec. 15.
