HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Offense continues to be the dominant force for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team in 2018.
Or is it the defense?
Either way you look at it, the Big Green (4-1) continue to be strong at both ends of the field as demonstrated by a 17-9 victory at Hofstra's (3-4) Shuart Stadium Friday afternoon.
Dartmouth came into the game ranked 20th in the nation in offense (14.5) and 16th in defense (9.50). They were better in both in their first game back following a 13-day break for exams.
Led on the attack by four goals each from Elizabeth Mastrio and Kierra Sweeney and 11 draw controls in the midfield by Kathryn Giroux, Friday's visitors put on another dominating display for their fourth straight victory.
The Green and White raced out to an early lead and held a 12-3 advantage at halftime, marking the third time this season Dartmouth had double-digit goals in one half of play.
Giroux had six draws by halftime, helping the Big Green maintain possession and generate more opportunities to score as they built a nine-goal edge at the break.
The lead teetered around 10 for much of the game with Hofstra netting two in the final minute to bring the final deficit to eight.
Ellie Carson continues to lead the team in goals as her three on Friday pushed her season total to 19 with Mastrio's 13 ranking second. Mastrio also had a pair of assists in just the second-ever meeting with Hofstra for a game-high six points.
Sweeney came into the game with just four goals on the season, but doubled that with three in the first half and another in the final frame against the Pride. Larson Bennett notched a pair of tallies as four players had multiple goals and eight total players scored for the visitors.
For Hofstra, Alexa Mattera led the way with four goals of her own, while five others each scored once.
All three goalkeepers saw action in the circle for the Green with sophomore Kiera Vrindten getting the win thanks to five saves on 10 shots in 49:15 of action.
The Big Green held a 36-19 edge in shot attempts with a 27-8 figure in the first half. Giroux had more draw controls than the entirety of the Pride roster as Dartmouth finished the game with an 18-10 advantage. The Green and White were also perfect on clear attempts (13-13), while forcing Hofstra into three fails (13-16).
Dartmouth now heads south to warmer climates to take on Jacksonville on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in northern Florida.
