PRINCETON, N.J. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team defeated Princeton, 15-12, Saturday afternoon at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The Big Green improved to 6-1 overall and are atop the Ivy League standings at 2-0 thanks to the victory as they pushed their win streak to six games with the result.
Dartmouth exorcised some personal demons with the win, erasing a four-game overall skid and six-game regular season slide against Princeton (5-2, 1-1 Ivy) dating back to the 2012 season. Saturday also marked the Green and White's first road win in the series since a 13-12 contest in 2008.
The Big Green were led by Elizabeth Mastrio and her five goals and six points.
“I'm very proud of our team and my coaching staff,” head coach Danielle Spencer said. “We believed in ourselves, worked together, stuck to the plan and fought hard for this win.
“We also had a tremendous turnout from Dartmouth fans and alumni who fed us a ton of energy from the stands,” Spencer continued. “We really appreciate all the support.”
The Green and White led 7-4 at the half and built the advantage to 13-7 with a little more than five minutes to play before having to endure a late-game push from the Tigers.
A series of draw controls and Princeton possessions led to the Tigers pulling to within two at 14-12, only to see the Big Green get the ball late and put the visitors back up three late with a goal from Tori Chanenchuk.
For Chanenchuk – who played her sister Colby on Princeton — it was her second goal of the day, joining Mastrio (5), Kierra Sweeney (3) and Sophia Turchetta (2) as the four members of the Big Green with multiple tallies in the game.
Larson Bennett, Ellie Carson and Katie Bourque all scored once for Dartmouth.
In goal, Kiera Vrindten made 11 saves to help the Green to win, her sixth straight as the sophomore has been the goalkeeper of record in every game this season.
Princeton's Kyla Sears and Annie Cory each score three times with Tess D'Orsi notching two in the losing effort. Sam Fish made nine saves, while Mary Kate McDonough stopped two.
Dartmouth will wrap-up its four-game road trip next Saturday at Harvard (1 p.m.).
