HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth rowing family was saddened to learn of the passing of former coach Thad Seymour at the age of 91.
Â
Seymour first came to Dartmouth in 1954 as a young instructor in the English department fresh off graduate work at the University of North Carolina.
Â
The rowing program was almost defunct when he arrived, but Thad helped revitalize it on a club basis by securing funds from alumni, family and friends. He served as volunteer head coach for three years and helped to bring Peter Gardner from Princeton to be the first full-time rowing coach. Seymour remained interested in the sport even after advancing to assistant professor in 1956, associate professor in 1959 and Dean of the College the same year.
Â
After serving as dean for a decade, Seymour was selected to be the 11th president of Wabash College, a position he held for nine years. While still at Wabash, Seymour returned to Hanover to announce one of the races over the radio in the spring of 1976. Alongside Thad Bennett '76, president of the Dartmouth Rowing Club, the two formed the Stewards of the Friends of Dartmouth Rowing, with Seymour serving as chairman and Bennet as president.
Â
Seymour remained in Indiana until 1978, at which point he became the 12th president of Rollins College, a job he held until his retirement in 1990. He was known for his public service within the community, co-founding the Winter Park-Maitland chapter of Habitat for Humanity and serving as chairman on the board of directors.
Â
Seymour is survived by Polly, his wife of 71 years, and their four children.
