HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team returned to action after a two-week break on Friday night at Thompson Arena.
Â
However, the break left the Big Green (3-3-1, 3-2-1 ECAC Hockey) a bit rusty as it fell to visiting Colgate (6-7-4, 4-2-1 ECAC Hockey), 5-1.
Â
The loss snapped the team's three-game win streak and stretch of four contests without a loss.
Â
Sophomore
Drew O'Connor scored the team's lone goal early in the second period, batting down a puck just under the crossbar for his fourth in three games.
Quin Foreman and
Matt Baker got the helpers on the power-play tally.
Â
"It didn't feel like the score was indicative of the game tonight," Koenig Family Head Coach
Bob Gaudet '81 said. "Not to take anything away from Colgate and what they did tonight, because they played well, but we just had a few moments where maybe the rust from our layoff showed up and came back to hurt us.
Â
"I felt good when we made it 2-1, but then we took a few penalties and they capitalized on them," Gaudet added. "That was the biggest difference tonight. They made us pay for mistakes and we didn't do the same."
Â
Bobby McMann and Jared Cockrell gave the visitors a 2-0 lead through 20. After O'Connor scored his fourth goal in the last three games, Colgate answered back with two more in the middle frame from Colton Young and Paul McAvoy. Arnaud Vachon sealed it with an unassisted breakaway tally just over five minutes into the third to help the Raiders leapfrog the Big Green in the ECAC Hockey standings.
Â
Colgate's goalie Andrew Farrier was stellar between the pipes, making 34 saves as Dartmouth had a 35-33 edge in shots on goal.
Adrian Clark stopped 28 at the other end of the ice for the home team.
Â
The Green and White will look to bounce back on Saturday night when they host No. 2 Cornell, the lone unbeaten team in the country at 10-0-0. The game will also serve as another collection night for donations for the annual toy drive for the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD).
