As it did last weekend, Dartmouth has four games on the slate over a three-day span, but this time against four different opponents at the Army Invitational at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. This is the Big Green's first trip to the Tar Heel State in 10 years when they opened the 2009 campaign with a pair of losses at Duke. Dartmouth will have time to rest up after this weekend with winter finals looming next week before embarking on a seven-game swing in Florida March 14-21. Ivy League play will begin directly after the trip on March 23-24 at Princeton, the earliest start for conference play in Big Green history.
Quick Scout of the Opponents
Tulane
- Which Green will prevail, the Big Green or the Green Wave? Tulane has its sights set on returning to an NCAA Regional after consecutive losing seasons, which came after back-to-back regional appearances.
- The only two losses thus far came in a three-game series at 10th-ranked Ole Miss last weekend, and the Green Wave swept a three-game series from George Washington, took two from Lamar and most recently defeated Nicholls, 7-4.
- Tulane is hitting .332 as a team with 15 home runs while averaging more than nine runs a game.
- Trevor Jensen (.462/.551/.744) and Kobi Owen (.433/.548/.900) have been the most potent bats in the lineup, though Kody Hoese and David Bedgood have matches Owen's four home runs.
- Opponents have hit just .221 against Green Wave pitchers, but while the staff has struck out 77 batters in 85.0 innings, they have also walked 41.
Fairleigh Dickinson
- The Knights have had some problems with the weather, having three games canceled at Davidson in North Carolina last weekend. But they did play the weekend prior at home in New Jersey (go figure), defeating Seton Hall in 10 innings, 6-5, before rallying to tie Dayton at three in a game called after eight innings.
- FDU hit .277 as a team but had just three extra-base hits in those two games.
- Adam Frank (not the former Big Green lefty in the Class of 2015) leads the team with a slash line of .571/.700/1.000, going 4-for-7 with a double and a triple thus far.
- The Knights pitching staff yielded just seven hits over 18 innings the first weekend, posting a 2.00 ERA with 15 strikeouts, but did walk a whopping 16 batters.
Army West Point
- The Black Knights have won three blowouts, lost another and nearly defeated top-ranked LSU, but a ninth-inning, three-run, walk-off homer allowed the Tigers to steal a 6-5 victory.
- The bats have produced a robust slash line of .329/.463/.503 in the first five games, and Jacob Hurtubise has reached base 16 times at the top of the lineup with nine hits and seven walks.
- Anthony Glachin (.400/.500/.800) has been the beneificiary more often than not of Hurtubise's prowess at getting on, driving in 14 runs in a mere 26 plate appearances.
- The pitching staff sports a strong 2.85 ERA with 42 strikeouts and just 18 walks over 41 innings.
Saint Joseph's
- This is the Hawks' third trip to North Carolina already this season. On Feb 15-17, they played at UNC Wilmington, splitting two with the host Seahawks while dropping two others against VMI. Last weekend, all three games scheduled to be played at High Point were rained out.
- Saint Joseph's has averaged just under five runs per game with much of the offense coming from James McConnon (.529/.600/.647) and Brendan Hueth (.389/.476/.500).
- The staff ERA entering the weekend is 6.09 as opposing hitters have hit .289 as Hawks' pitchers have struck out 27 and walked 23 over 34.0 innings.
- Seven of the 30 runs allowed by Saint Joseph's have been unearned.
Last Time Out
- Dartmouth won its season opener at UTSA last weekend behind 7.1 strong innings from senior RHP Cole O'Connor. The Roadrunners touched him for three runs, all earned, on eight hits and a pair of walks as he struck out three before left-handers Michael Parsons and Max Hunter closed the door on the 4-3 win with the latter earning his first collegiate save.
- The Big Green are now 14-16 on opening day under head coach Bob Whalen.
- The win was also the 10th of O'Connor's career at Dartmouth.
- That would be the only win of the weekend for the Big Green as UTSA outscored them in the final three games, 31-8.
- Senior SS Nate Ostmo was the only Dartmouth player to hit safely in each of the first four games, though Michael Calamari and Blake Crossing did get hits in the three games in which they played.
- Calamari also provided the first (and only) Big Green long ball of the season, a solo shot in a 12-3 loss in game three.
- Freshman southpaw Trystan Sarcone was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for throwing three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts. This is the 14th consecutive year the Green have had at least one player earn the honor, by far the longest active streak in the Ancient Eight.
- The Dartmouth defense committed just one error in all spanning the first four games.
