Dartmouth defeats Wisconsin to advance to the NCAA Frozen Four
Cherie Piper
Trailing 3-2 in the first period after the Big Green knotted the score twice, junior Cherie Piper tallied her 22nd goal of the season from classmate Katie Weatherston and senior Cheryl Muranko, tying the game for a third time early in the second. It wasn't until Weatherston found the back of the net with 5:37 to go in regulation that Dartmouth claimed its first lead and held on to knock off Wisconsin, 4-3, in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green managed to maintain that edge and oust the Badgers from their first NCAA Tournament thanks in part to a 21-save performance from junior Kate Lane. Weatherston finished the contest with two goals and an assist, Piper had two helpers to go with her tally and Muranko assisted on three of Dartmouth's four scores.
With the victory, the Green improved to 27-6-0, tying its single-season wins record and advancing to the Frozen Four for the third straight year.
Joining Dartmouth in the field were Minnesota, Harvard and St. Lawrence. The Gophers defeated the Big Green in the semifinals before edging the Crimson to win the championship.
