HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its preseason poll for the 2021-22 men's basketball season today with Dartmouth picked to finish sixth in the Ancient Eight, while the entire poll listed all eight teams exactly where they finished in the most recent season of play in 2019-20.
No fewer than five teams got at least two first-place votes in what is expected to be a wide-open race. Defending champion Yale edged out Harvard for the top spot in the poll with seven first-place votes and 115 points, while the Crimson garnered four first-place votes and 110 points. Princeton was a close third with 108 points with Penn fourth (93), Brown fifth (79), Dartmouth sixth (43), Cornell seventh (39) and Columbia eighth (25). Princeton, Penn and Brown each received two first-place votes as well.
The Big Green, which was 12-17 overall and 5-9 in Ivy League play, will feature plenty of new faces this year as well as a few veterans, including guard
Brendan Barry (6-2, 180) who returned to Dartmouth after playing last year at Temple as a graduate student. In his first three years with the Big Green, Barry averaged 9.8 points over 81 games while shooting 44.5 percent from the perimeter, third all-time at Dartmouth. He needs 106 points to reach 1,000 for his career and 205 to hit the milestone in a Big Green uniform.
Dartmouth's second-leading scorer from the 2019-20 campaign is back as well in fifth-year senior forward
Aaryn Rai (6-6, 220). The Canadian native put up 11.2 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds a night while shooting better than 50 percent from the floor.
The other returning starter from two years ago is senior point guard
Taurus Samuels (6-1, 190). He took over at the point as a sophomore shortly before the opening game when Barry suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason workouts and provided 8.4 points along with 2.1 assists per game.
Two other seniors will look to take on larger roles in guard
Wes Slajchert (6-4, 190) and forward
Garrison Wade (6-6, 210). Slajchert saw action in all 29 games in 2019-20, playing over 17 minutes a night while scoring 2.4 points, and Wade played 9.1 minutes per game in all but two contests, contributing 2.0 points.
The six juniors will have the opportunity to make a much larger impact compared to their rookie seasons as none played more than a total of 84 minutes or scored more than 12 points. And with four sophomores and five freshmen that have yet to play in their first collegiate games, head coach
David McLaughlin is closely evaluating the talent on his roster to determine the best combinations on the floor.
The season opens up at Boston College on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. Many of the games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Bob Lipman and former Big Green head coach Dave Faucher announcing the games. Big Green fans will also be able to listen to home games through the official website of Big Green athletics, DartmouthSports.com, featuring Brett Franklin and Bill Murphy on the call.
