HAPPY (ALMOST) NEW YEAR
After a little break for Christmas, the Dartmouth women's basketball team is back for two games at Leede Arena. First up, the Big Green will play one final game in 2021 – and their last non-conference tilt – against UMass on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
LAST TIME OUT
A large run by the home team during the second half proved too much as Dartmouth fell to Maine, 65-53, on the Green's final stop during its eight-day road trip.
·
Mekkena Boyd and
Carrington Washburn led with 14 points apiece, while Boyd was also first with eight rebounds.
Victoria Page went 5-for-6 in free throws (.833).
· After keeping the Black Bears off the board for the first five minutes of the game, Dartmouth kept the momentum going and ended the first quarter with a 16-3 advantage.
· Maine did a little bit of catching up and had a small run near the end of the second quarter, but still stayed far behind (30-17).
· The teams traded threes to start the third, with
Mia Curtis and Boyd getting in on the fun. The Bears went on a 7-0 run in the final two minutes to get within eight (45-37).
· Maine continued on its hot streak, starting the fourth on a 9-0 run to pull ahead for the first time. Boyd's 3-pointer gave the lead back to the Big Green before two lead changes and three ties gave the home team a six-point lead (58-52). Boyd had a free throw while the other team hit six to end the game (65-53).
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
UMass has had a great first half of its season and heads into its final game of 2021 with a 12-2 mark. Their two losses came against a pair of arguably tough opponents – No. 13 Iowa State (76-71) and Boston College (66-60).
After the loss against the Eagles on Dec. 8, the Minutewomen have gone on a three-game winning streak against Columbia (87-75), Vermont (68-63) and Hartford (86-40).
LAST TIME AGAINST UMASS
A series that was started in the 80s took a pause in December of 1998 after a 72-70 Dartmouth victory. The series was picked back up 15 years later: the Big Green opened 2013 with another two-point win (57-55) and ended 2013 with a similarly close 76-72 victory.
The teams haven't met since that game at Leede Arena on New Year's Eve. Dartmouth has a one-game lead since first meeting in 1981.
