New Year, New Season
• Dartmouth gets to turn the page on 2021 and welcome both a new year and the new season with the start of Ivy League play at Cornell.
• With the postponement of the UNH game this past week, the Big Green suffered through a winless December for the first time in 16 years, dropping all seven games.
• Over the last six of those defeats, the difference at the end of regulation has been, on average, just 2.7 points.
•
Brendan Barry led the team during the West Coast swing, averaging 16.3 points a game while hitting 11-of-27 3-pointers, including his 200th triple in a Dartmouth uniform.
• The trip was a good one for forward
Garrison Wade, who also averaged double figures (10.3 ppg) while hitting more than half of his shots (11-of-21, .524) and 40 percent from the perimeter (6-of-15).
•
Cam Krystkowiak had a breakout game during the trip out West, tallying a career-high 20 points at California.
• Overall as a team, Dartmouth ranks among the top 25 nationally in 3-pointers made per game (10.1).
• The Big Green have also excelled at the charity stripe this year, hitting 75.7 percent of their free throws, but have only attempted 10.1 per game, the lowest rate in Division I.
Series vs. Cornell
• While Dartmouth did not trail in the series between 1957 until 2013, the Big Red now owns a 112-108 advantage.
• The Big Green swept the series in 2019-20 for the first time in 17 years, topping Cornell in Hanover, 75-53, before taking an 82-70 decision in Ithaca.
• Four Dartmouth players averaged at least 15 points in the two contests, three of whom have graduated, the other being
Aaryn Rai at 15.5 ppg, and he also hit 12-of-15 field goals.
• Dartmouth is 10-19 versus Cornell in Newman Arena, but has split the last six games there after dropping 11 straight.
Scouting the Big Red
• Cornell has had quite the turnaround from a 7-20 campaign in 2019-20, already topping its win total with an uptempo offense that is fifth in the nation in scoring.
• The Big Red's only losses have come to Penn State, Virginia Tech and Syracuse.
• With all that scoring, Cornell's leader is Jordan Jones at a surprisingly low 12.7 ppg with Keller Boothby the only other player in double figures at 10.5 ppg.
• Speaking of Boothby, he leads the country in 3-point accuracy at 56.9 percent (33-of-58).
• All those points lead to a lot of shots and rebounds; the Big Red are 10th nationally with 42.3 per game, led by Kobe Dickson at 5.9.
• The offense is predicated on sharing the ball, and Cornell does that well with a Division I-best 21.5 assists per game, and Dickson leads the team there as well with 39 helpers.
• If you're looking for an Achilles' heel, maybe free throws (.673) or turnovers (14.1 per game).
• The 1999 Ivy League Player of the Year, Brian Earl (Princeton '99), is in his sixth year as the Big Red's head coach after spending nine seasons as an assistant at his alma mater. He enters this weekend with a record of 50-76.
Mostly New Faces
You'll have to forgive Cornell if it doesn't recognize this Big Green team. Only four players on the Dartmouth squad have played even 15 minutes against the Big Red, and one of those —
Brendan Barry — hasn't seen action against them in three years. Surprisingly, Barry hasn't had the best luck against Cornell, shooting less then 30 percent from the perimeter while averaging 7.2 points. The active leading scorer against the Big Red is
Aaryn Rai at 9.2 ppg while shooting 65.5 percent (19-of-29).
Déjà Vu Jà Vu Jà Vu Jà Vu
It has become quite the broken record (that's a vinyl album for you youngsters). For three straight games and five times in eight contests, Dartmouth has had the ball in the final seconds with a chance to tie the score with a 3-pointer, the most recent when trailing Cal State Bakersfield on Dec. 21, 59-56. One shot by
Taurus Samuels missed the mark, and
Aaryn Rai was fouled while attempting another. His first of three free throws were off the mark, however, and the Green eventually lost by four, 61-57. Dartmouth also came up short against Boston College on Dec. 11 and Quinnipiac three days prior, both at home. But
Brendan Barry had success against both Bryant on Nov. 28 and FGCU on Dec. 4, sending both games into overtime. Dartmouth eventually beat the Bulldogs to start this stretch, 63-61, but fell to the Eagles in Florida, 78-68.
Barry the Three
Graduate
Brendan Barry has continued to be one of the most prolific and accurate 3-point shooters in the country, ranking eighth nationally in triples made per game (3.8) and 47th in accuracy (42.9 percent) from long range. Six times he has canned five or more treys this year, and he has 201 in his Dartmouth career, including five at Cal State Bakersfield that pushed him over 200, just the fifth BIg Green player to reach that figure. His 44.3 percent accuracy is third best on the Big Green charts and seventh best among active Division I players.
Wade-ing into the Starting End
Since joining the starting lineup against Boston University on Dec. 11,
Garrison Wade has improved his overall production, averaging 9.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in those four contests. His most recent effort at Cal State Bakersfield provided 12 points with three 3-pointers. He also hauled in a career-high eight rebounds against BU and seven more at Cal. For the season, Wade leads the team with eight blocks and is second on the glass with 4.5 rebounds a night.
