HANOVER, N.H. – Women's rugby head coach
Katie Dowty has announced the 2021 fall schedule, saying that the team is very ready to be back in action after 21 months.
"We couldn't be more excited to be back out on the pitch this fall, doing what we love," Dowty said. "This year's Division I NIRA competition will be more robust than ever, with eight teams in the mix as we welcome three new teams to DI competition. Following the pandemic hiatus, we expect programs will have changed dramatically and we are ready for a highly contested season. Our team has worked tirelessly to make sure we come out of the pandemic stronger than ever, and we have no qualms about how determined we are to achieve our immense potential this fall."
All seven of the Big Green's regular season matches will be against National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) opponents. Having always been a small conference, a trio of teams have been added this year: LIU Post, Mount St. Mary's, and Sacred Heart.
Dartmouth will open its campaign at home against the LIU Sharks (Sept. 1) before hitting the road two weekends in a row against Quinnipiac and Army West Point (Sept. 11, 18). The Green will spend almost the entirety of October at Brophy Field as they host Sacred Heart, Mount St. Mary's and Harvard (Oct. 2, 9, 23) before ending the regular season against Brown (Oct. 30). The NIRA Championship games will take place in November.
"This year, the Ivy Rugby champion will be crowned based on head-to-head Ivy outcomes within NIRA league play," Dowty continued. "As the league continues to grow and evolve, we are so proud to be a part of the NCAA movement and we believe we have the ability to play an unprecedented standard of rugby this fall as we aim to repeat as Ivy Champion and reclaim the national title."
