RACICE, Czech Republic — Despite not having a season this spring due to COVID-19, the Big Green lightweight rowing team was able to send four competitors to the U23 World Championships, coached by Dartmouth assistant coach
Trevor Michelson.
Rowing for the U.S. in the lightweight quad event, the four-man crew of juniors
Jack Stone and
Chris Stich, senior
Cooper Tuckerman and
Sean Ward '21 competed in a qualifying heat against Germany, Italy, Spain and the Czech Republic, earning a spot in the A-Final with a time of 6:04.68.
On Saturday the quartet competed in the finals on calm waters with a slight tail breeze, finishing in sixth place with a time of 6:09.17. Claiming the gold was a team from Germany, which came in at 5:56.23, well ahead of the field while France took the silver and Italy the bronze.
"Making the A-Final is a tremendous accomplishment," lightweight rowing head coach
Dan Roock said. "They went as fast as they could to keep up with the top crews but could not sustain that level of speed. Nonetheless, it was a great experience, and three of the four return to Dartmouth at least two more years of rowing."
The lightweight team will start the 2021 fall season at the Head of the Charles on October 23.
