HANOVER, N.H. —
Aaryn Rai and
Brendan Barry have both announced that they will return to play for the Dartmouth men's basketball team during the 2021-22 year. Rai will return as a fifth-year player for head coach
David McLaughlin, while Barry, originally a member of the Class of 2020, comes back to the Big Green as a graduate student after playing last winter at Temple in the same capacity.
With the Ivy League granting a one-year exception that allows graduate students to play for their alma mater, Barry found the door open for his return in order to make every effort he could to bring a conference crown back to Hanover. The native of Fair Haven, New Jersey, last played for Dartmouth in the 2018-19 season as a junior, missing the following campaign due to an injury. In three seasons with the Green, Barry has scored 795 points (9.8 per game) while shooting 44.5 percent on his 159 made 3-pointers. he also has averaged 3.0 assists with a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio. Adding in his season at Temple, Barry needs just 95 points to reach 1,000 for his collegiate career and enters the 2021-22 campaign fifth among active players in career 3-point percentage (.447).
"When people ask me what's so special about Dartmouth basketball," Barry said, "my teammates are the first thing that come to mind, the type of guys they are. And my relationship with Coach Mac is another big reason I'm back. My goal coming into Dartmouth was to make us a winner. I feel like I need to step up as a leader. The plan is to win the Ivy League, and with my experience coming back from Temple last year, that leadership is going to be very important."
Rai, on the other hand, returns to the Big Green for a fifth-year before heading off to medical school with a neuroscience degree in hand. In the 2019-20 season, the forward from Markham, Ontario, led Dartmouth in rebounding (6.4 per game, sixth in the Ivy League) and was second on the squad in scoring (11.2 ppg) while shooting 50.6 percent from the floor to be named the team's Rudy LaRusso Award winner as the most improved. In 82 career games and 58 starts for McLaughlin's team, Rai has a shot at reaching the 1,000-point plateau with 608 points currently to his name (7.4 per game).
"At the beginning of last year, I put my name in the portal due to COVID," Rai said. "I was talking to Coach Mac about the options, potentially moving my courses to come back or if there was a good fit elsewhere out there. I just felt returning to this team was going to be the best decision for me with the relationships I have developed, to have the chance to have one more go at it with a real talented group of guys and a great coaching staff."
Coach McLaughlin is thrilled to have the two veteran leaders back on the court for the Big Green. "Their overall experience and proven ability to compete at a high level will be key for our group. More importantly, they both know what it takes to have ownership and accountability over their own development process, while valuing relationships throughout our program. With their positive outlook and belief in our program, we will challenge the two of them to lead us on and off of the court.
"I could not be more excited to get back on the floor with them and push them as both players and leaders each day. As a program we discuss excellence in our everyday approach, and Brendan and Aaryn will be ready to help us achieve that each day."
