vs. BROWN (8-8, 0-1)
Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022 | 7 PM | ESPN+
Leede Arena | Hanover, N.H.
Game Off, Game On
• Dartmouth plays just one game this weekend against Brown on Saturday night with the postponement of its scheduled contest on Friday against Yale due to COVID-19 protocols.
• The only spectators allowed in the arena will be those on a limited pass list provided by the players and coaches. Those spectators will need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result from the previous 72 hours, as well as wear a mask at all times while inside.
• The Big Green came up short in its most recent outing, a 79-71 defeat at Cornell in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
• Dartmouth has lost eight straight games, but the difference at the end of regulation of the last seven has been, on average, just 3.4 points.
•
Aaryn Rai led the Green with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists against the Big Red, and his 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game are tops on the squad for the season.
• Both
Garrison Wade (15 points) and
Dame Adelekun (14) posted career highs against Cornell, with the latter more than doubling his season output to that point (6 points).
•
Brendan Barry continues to be a focal point of opposing defenses as one of the top 3-point shooters in the country. He enters the weekend 12th in triples per game (3.67) and ninth among active Division I players in career 3-point accuracy (44.1 percent).
• Overall as a team, Dartmouth ranks among the top 25 nationally in 3-pointers made per game (10.1, 22nd).
• The Big Green have also excelled at the charity stripe this year, hitting 76.0 percent of their free throws to lead the league, but have only attempted 10.4 per game, the lowest rate in Division I.
Series vs. Brown
• Dartmouth is clinging to an 81-80 lead in the all-time series against the Bears, but Brown has won six of the last seven showdowns
• Over the last nine meetings, seven have been decided by three points or fewer and only one by double digits (the last game in 2020).
• The Bears have won the last four in the series with the most recent Big Green win coming on Feb. 18, 2018, by a 66-63 margin at Leede Arena.
• Since Leede Arena opened in 1987, Dartmouth is 21-12 at the venue against Brown.
Scouting the Bears
• Since winning four straight games in early December, Brown has lost its last four to Vermont, Syracuse and Maryland before dropping its Ivy opener at Penn last weekend, 77-73.
• The Bears will be at a disadvantage in this game after playing at Harvard on Friday night.
• Graduate Tamenang Choh is the veteran leader of this squad, averaging 12.3 points and 8.0 rebounds, but he is only shooting 37.0 percent from the floor this year.
• A good chunk of the long-distance shooting has been handled by Kino and Kimo. Rookie Kino Lilly Jr. leads the squad with 12.7 ppg on 38-of-101 (.376) from downtown, while sophomore Kimo Ferrari is 19-of-47 (.404).
• Let's not overlook Paxson Wojcik who has 23 triples and is averaging 10.0 ppg.
• Jaylan Gainey is the top presence in the post, shooting 68.1 percent while contributing 8.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg to go with a league-best 28 blocks.
• Mike Martin (Brown '04) is in his 10th year at the helm with a 116-132 record, posting 20 wins in 2018-19 with the last victory coming in the CBI. He spent six years on the staff at Penn before returning to the team he led to three second-place finishes as a player.
What Can Brown Do For You?
The current players on the Dartmouth roster are looking to break out against the Bears. Only
Aaryn Rai and
Brendan Barry have had double-digit scoring outings against Brown in their careers, but only three times between them and never more than 13 points. Rai is the active leader versus the Bears at 6.6 ppg, Barry is at 5.3 and
Taurus Samuels 4.0. And the current team has hit just 12-of-53 3-pointers (.226) against the Brown defense. One might say these are "unbearable" numbers. I'll let myself out …
Career Outings
Dartmouth may not have been able to pull out a road win in its Ivy League opener this past Sunday at Cornell, but both
Garrison Wade and
Dame Adelekun provided career highs in scoring for the Big Green. Wade, who had 15 points, has upped his production since joining the starting lineup in the most recent home game on Dec. 11, averaging 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in his five starts. Adelekun, on the other hand, overcame an early-season injury and showed off his offensive skills against the Big Red with 14 points on 5-of-7 field goals as well as four rebounds and a pair of assists. Those 14 points make up more than two-thirds of his season total (20).
Threes Coming in Tens
With 121 3-pointers through a dozen games, Dartmouth ranks among the top 25 teams in Division I in 3-pointers made per game (10.1, 22nd). In fact, the Big Green have made at least 10 in nine of those 12 contests, including a stretch of six straight games from Nov. 13, to Dec. 8, tying a program record. In the most recent outing, Dartmouth collected exactly 10 triples at a 43.5 percent clip at Cornell on Jan. 2.
