CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth women's rugby team erased a 16-point second-half deficit to hand Harvard its first loss by a final score of 31-29 Saturday afternoon at Roberto A. Mignone Field.
Katelyn Walker's try with just 30 seconds left on the clock tied the game and set the stage for
Kristin Bitter's clutch game-winning conversion in what could only go down as the game of the year around the NIRA.
After trailing 19-5 at halftime, Dartmouth went on to flip the script late in the match. The Crimson, who averaged nearly 70 points per game entering the contest, were kept out of the try zone over the final 30 minutes of action.
Facing a 26-10 deficit,
Seven Sassano powered over the line and Dartmouth inched even closer with Bitter's conversion. The Big Green fully seized momentum just minutes later with
Josie Harrison's interception and subsequent sprint to pay dirt. Bitter was once again successful on the kick and Dartmouth was within two.
Looking to stave off the Big Green's comeback bid, Harvard scored its final points of the match on a penalty kick with three minutes remaining.
Dartmouth obtained possession and spent much of the final minute on the doorstep until Walker received a well-placed pitch and darted into the try zone to tie the game, 29-29, setting up Bitter's game-winning conversion.
With zeros on the clock, both sides collectively held their breaths as the senior lined up and knocked it through the uprights. The comeback was complete.
"As soon as I made contact and saw that it went through, I immediately turned around to see my teammates running toward me," Bitter said. "It was a great team win."
A team win it was – it took an all-around effort to emerge victorious on Harvard's home turf.
Ariana Ramsey opened Dartmouth's scoring in her long-awaited return to action, tying the game at 5-5. The Big Green trailed 19-5 early in the second half before
Lauren Ferridge's tally cut the Crimson's advantage to single digits.
Dartmouth's 14th consecutive win, dating back to last season, came just a couple days after the NIRA's announcement that the 2022 Divisional Championships will be held in Hanover.
The red-hot Big Green return home for the final two matches of the regular season. They'll host Princeton on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
