HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth Athletics today announced that
Trevor Michelson, a member of the Big Green rowing staff for the past five years, has been promoted to interim head coach for lightweight rowing following the retirement of
Dan Roock.
"I am delighted to promote
Trevor Michelson to lead our lightweight rowing program," said Mike Harrity, Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Throughout the process, it became abundantly clear that Trevor's authenticity, passion for rowing and investment in each team member's growth both inside and outside of sport, align with the values of the institution. I'm excited for Trevor's leadership as we head into the new academic year."
Originally hired in 2017 as an assistant for the lightweight team, Michelson shifted over to the women's crew for the 2020-21 season that was mostly lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But he returned to the lightweight team for this past season, helping the lightweight four earn a bronze medal at the IRA Championship earlier this month.
Captain
Jack Stone is pleased with the announcement. "As the assistant coach, Trevor made a huge impact on the team's technical, physical, and mental performance. I am excited to see how his new position as head coach helps the team grow on and off the water this year."
A 2013 graduate of Wesleyan, Michelson was a four-year rower, team captain and MVP as well as a first-team All-NESCAC selection for the Cardinals. Before making the move to Hanover, the New York City native was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater for the men's rowing program, coaching the novice 8+ and the third varsity 8+ boats. He also served as the head coach for the Vesper Boat Club's Under 23 Lightweight Men's team in the summer of 2017.
Michelson spent one year at Fordham University working with both the men's and women's crews in coaching and boatman positions, respectively, prior to his coaching stint at Wesleyan. He also volunteered as a sculling instructor at Craftsbury Sculling Center, coaching junior-aged athletes.
"I'd like to thank the Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation Mike Harrity for giving me the opportunity to lead the Dartmouth Lightweights," Michelson said. "I'd also like to thank [sports administrator] Jen Chuks-Crabill,
Peter Roby and the Friends of Dartmouth Rowing for their support of rowing throughout my time in Hanover. I would not be here without
Dan Roock, nor [Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Heavyweight Rowing]
Wyatt Allen and head women's coach
Nancy LaRocque, whose mentorship has been paramount in my growth as a coach. It is the honor of a lifetime to be at the helm of the Dartmouth Lightweights, and I can't wait to get started!"
Michelson is no stranger to international competition having coached the men's double at the 2018 Junior World Championships, and the 2021 lightweight quad to an A-final appearance at the Under 23 World Championships. He also competed at the World University Games in 2015 as the U.S. Lightweight Single Sculler.
