FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Dartmouth women's rugby has never lost a season opener, and the Big Green kept that streak alive with a 29-3 victory at Sacred Heart. The defending national champions used a dominant second half to kickoff their title defense with a road win and extend their winning streak to 10.
"It was great to finally play our first game of the season," said head coach
Katie Dowty. "There were areas of the game we were very happy with, but much to Sacred Heart's credit, they definitely challenged us in other areas. We are excited to look back at the film, make those adjustments and really find our rhythm as we move into next week's big home opener versus Quinnipiac!"
Lauren Ferridge led Dartmouth with two tries.
Sophie Ragg,
Jordan Duncan and
Asialeata Meni had one apiece, while
Abbey Savin and
Kristin Bitter both notched conversions.
Sadie Schier and
Sophia Haley both recorded three tackles.
Sacred Heart (1-1-1) opened the scoring early in the first half with a successful penalty kick – the only points the Big Green would surrender for the remainder of the contest. Dartmouth (1-0) jumped ahead midway through the half with the first of Ferridge's two tries and later took a 10-3 lead into halftime after Ragg found the try zone.
Duncan scored the first of three tries in a lopsided second half, earning her first career try in her collegiate debut, bringing the score to 17-3 following Savin's conversion. 13 minutes later, it was Ferridge once again to give Dartmouth a commanding 22-3 advantage before Meni's try and Bitter's kick provided the exclamation point on a 29-3 triumph.
Next up for the Big Green is the home opener against Quinnipiac Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
