WORCESTER, Mass. — Dartmouth built up a 5-1 lead only to have Holy Cross score six unanswered runs as the Crusaders (13-30) defeated the Big Green (1-32) on Tuesday at Fitton Field, 7-5. Jack Toomey had four hits and Patrick Casserly homered for the hosts, while
Elliot Krewson had his first career four-hit game to pace the 10-hit Dartmouth attack.
The Big Green began the game with consecutive singles by
Kolton Freeman and Krewson, and after
Peter O'Toole bunted them over,
Max Zajec brought home the game's first run with a grounder to first.
After right-hander
Eddie Albert completed two scoreless innings — striking out the side in the second — the Big Green padded their lead in the third. Krewson hit a sinking liner to center that was trapped for a base hit, and with two down, Zajec worked a walk and
Jackson Hower grounded a pitch back up the middle for an RBI single. House drove the next pitch into left-center and the ball just glanced off the glove of the diving center fielder for a two-run double and a 4-0 lead.
Toomey got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the third as his long drive banged off the center-field fence for an RBI double. But left-hander
Jeff Lee avoided further damage by getting a shallow fly to right and a hard liner to left that was tracked down by Hower to strand runners at second and third.
In the fourth,
Tyler Robinson legged out a leadoff triple, and following a walk to Freeman, trotted home on a double play grounder, boosting the Big Green lead back to four at 5-1. But Casserly one-upped Robinson by launching a towering fly ball to left that landed on the other side of the fence for his fifth round-tripper of the year leading off the Crusader half. After a one-out walk and hit batter, Holy Cross pulled off a double steal, scored a run on a wild pitch and another on a sacrifice fly to center, making it a one-run game.
The Crusaders claimed the lead in the sixth, jumping on reliever
Mac Burke (0-3) for three runs. A walk and an infield hit set the table for Connor Toomey, who lined an RBI single to center, knotting the game at five. Chris Baillargeon then shot the left-center gap with a stinging line drive, scoring two more for a 7-5 Holy Cross advantage.
Ben Talbot took over on the mound from there, allowing just a leadoff double to Krewson in the ninth in his three innings, though he did spear two line drives back at him to deny the Big Green an opportunity to rally. The right-hander struck out three in his stint to earn his first save, making a winner out of reliever Jaden Wywoda (3-2), who surrendered one run over 3.1 innings.
Dartmouth will complete its eight-game road swing this weekend with a three-game series at Brown. The doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. with the finale on Sunday at noon. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+, and live stats will be available on DartmouthSports.com, the official website of Dartmouth Athletics.
Notes: The Big Green saw their losing skid stretch to 25 games … Dartmouth narrowly out-hit the Crusaders, 10-9, just the fifth time it has done so in a game this season, though two have come in the last three contests.
