PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – No. 14 Penn scored 10 unanswered goals en route to a 15-8 victory over the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team in Ivy League action on Saturday afternoon at Ace Adams Field at Penn Park. The Big Green close the season with a 6-9, 3-4 record while the Quakers improve to 11-4, 7-0.
Lucy Murray finished with four points after scoring three goals and providing one assist.
Catherine Erb and
Samantha Bennett each had three points. Erb scored two and assisted one while Bennett had three assists.
Maja Desmond had one goal and one assist and
Katie Elders and
Rosie McCarthy each scored once.
Reed Cole and
Caroline Kendall both had two caused turnovers for the Big Green.
Niki Miles led all scorers with six goals. Anna Brandt finished with four goals for the Quakers. Maria Themelis scored two goals while Erika Chung finished with one goal and two assists.
Penn opened the scoring inside the first few minutes of the game when Miles scored her first goal of the day. Brandt extended the lead for Quakers just over a minute later.
McCarthy tallied the Big Green's first goal of the day at the 10:17 mark of the first quarter. After Penn scored midway through the frame to push the lead back to two, Dartmouth rattled off the next three goals to take a 4-3 lead.
Desmond scored her 18
th goal of the season to cut the deficit to one. Erb got on the scoresheet a minute later to tie the game before Murray scored her first goal of the afternoon to put the Big Green ahead, 4-3, with just under one minute remaining in the opening quarter.
Brandt scored her second of the quarter with just 10 seconds until the break, starting a run of 10 unanswered goals for the Quakers that lasted until the final few minutes of the third quarter.
Murray ended the Dartmouth scoring drought with 1:03 remaining in the third.
Facing a 14-5 deficit going into the final quarter, the Big Green outscored the Quakers, 3-1, in the last frame.
Erb scored her second goal of the day early in the fourth off an assist from Bennett. Elders tallied an unassisted goal midway through the quarter before Murray completed her hat-trick at the 4:42 mark.
Miles added her sixth goal in the final moments of the contest.
Penn held the edge in draw controls (18-9) and shots (34-16).
The Quakers will serve as the No. 1 seed and host for the Ivy League tournament next weekend.
Notes: Catherine Erb is the first freshman to end the season as the leading goal scorer for the Big Green since Lauren Holleran '95 did so in the 1992 season.
