HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The Big Green travelled to Texas to open their season and face the Sam Houston Bearkats for the first time in program history. Looking to start their season on a high note, the Big Green and Bearkats were neck and neck through the first two innings, but Sam Houston was able to pull away, defeating the Big Green 7-2.
Â
While the Big Green suffer their first loss of the season, the Bearkats move to 3-2.
Â
The Bearkats, playing their fifth game of the season, got out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Easton Loyd led off for the Bearkats, knocking a double to left field. The Big Green then recorded two outs, but the Bearkats recorded a pair of hits to score two runs and take the lead.
Â
It did not take long for the Big Green to respond, leading off with a double of their own in the top half of the second.
Nathan Cmeyla, who knocked the double to right field, advanced to third base on a
Jackson Hower single before scoring on a throwing error by the Bearkats.
Tyler Robinson then hit a single to right field to score Hower and tie the game at two.
Â
The Big Green were able to keep the Bearkats off the scoreboard in the second inning, but they were able to take the lead again in their half of the third inning. The pattern of doubling to lead off a scoring inning continued when Walker Janek knocked the 2-2 count pitch to right center. Malachi Lott then homered to right field on the very next pitch to retake the two-run lead for the Bearkats.
Â
Sam Houston continued to pile on in the fifth inning, adding three more runs to extend their lead to five. Lott was hit by a pitch prior to a fielder's choice and error to put two runners on. Hunter Autrey then cleared the bases with a double to give the Bearkats the three-run lead. The Bearkats recorded their first out of the inning on a sacrifice fly that scored Autrey to give them a 7-2 lead headed into the final third of the game.
Â
The Big Green scattered 12 hits across nine innings but also left 12 runners on base. They had multiple opportunities to chip away at the Bearkats' lead including two runners on base in three straight innings but were not able to get anyone else across home plate.
Â
Despite the loss,
Nathan Cmeyla started his senior campaign on a high note, recording three hits: a single, double, and triple, missing only the home run for the cycle.
Â
Clark Gilmore made his first start of his senior campaign, pitching the first 4.1 innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits, five of which were for extra bases. Gilmore also walked and struck out one batter.
Eddie Albert pitched the remaining 3.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Â
The Big Green will look to get in the win column in the second game of the series with the Bearkats when they send
Devin Milberg to the mound for his first start of the year.

First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 4 p.m. eastern standard time and can be followed via live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
