HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The Big Green entered Sunday's matchup with the Bearkats looking to salvage a win in the final game of their series on opening weekend. The Bearkats took a 3-0 lead and despite the Big Green pulling within one run, the Bearkats scored eight runs over the final four innings to secure the 11-3 victory.
The Bearkats extend their winning streak to three games, moving to 5-2 on the season while the Big Green fall to 0-3.
Dartmouth was able to get two runners on with only one out in the first inning but were unable to capitalize, leaving an opportunity for the Bearkats to get on the board first. They did just that, leading off their half of the first inning with a single before a double drove the runner home, giving the Bearkats a 1-0 lead.
Sam Houston extended their lead in the third, adding two runs on a walk and two hits.
Nathan Cmeyla continued his strong opening weekend performance, leading off the top half of the fourth inning with a home run to pull the Big Green within two runs. They then retired the Bearkats in order in the bottom of the fourth and pulled within one run in the fifth.
Kolton Freeman singled on the first pitch he saw, coming home on a
Tyler Robinson double to center field, cutting the Bearkats lead to 3-2.
It did not take long for the Bearkats to respond as an error put the leadoff man on in the bottom of the fifth inning. Three straight singles scored two runs, followed by a sacrifice fly to score a third. Another error advanced a runner to third before the Big Green were able to record the second out of the inning, also allowing a fourth run to score and giving the Bearkats a 7-2 lead.
The Bearkats continued their scoring momentum in the bottom of the sixth inning, leading it off with a homerun. Two straight walks followed by a single scored the Bearkats' second run of the inning, pushing their lead to seven runs.
The Big Green were able to collect one more run in the top of the seventh when Freeman singled and crossed home on a
Tyler Robinson triple. Despite collecting one run, the Bearkats added two more of their own in their half of the seventh, making the score 11-3.
Jack Metzger started on the mound for the Big Green, pitching four innings and giving up seven runs five of which were earned, on seven hits.
Danny Will,
Marco Dumsky, and
Mac Burke all pitched in relief for the Big Green. Will pitched one scoreless inning, while Dumsky and Burke combined for the remaining three innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
The Big Green will return to action next weekend when they travel to the sunshine state to face North Florida for three games. The first game on Friday evening is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
