The Big Green scored five runs in the first inning
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Big Green got out to a hot start Saturday afternoon but the Ospreys battled back, coming from five runs down and only allowing three more over the remaining eight innings to defeat the Big Green, 14-8.
With the win, the Ospreys move to 7-3 while the Big Green fall to 0-5.
Despite the start time being earlier than expected, the Big Green wasted no time. Tyler Robinson singled on the first pitch of the game, then stealing second base. It only took two pitches for Robinson to score, coming home on an Elliot Krewson single to put the Big Green on the board. One pitch later, Kolton Freeman smacked a ball out of the park in left field, giving the Big Green a 3-0 lead.
Their first inning success did not stop there as an error allowed Ethan Brown to reach, coming home on a Max Zajec triple to left field. Taer Rodriguez then drew a walk before Jackson Hower recorded the Big Green's fourth hit of the inning to drive home Zajec and give Dartmouth a 5-0 lead.
The Ospreys led off their half of the first inning with a single, then hit a home run of their own to cut the Big Green's lead to three.
Devin Milberg, who made the start on the mound for the Big Green, settled down after the first inning, striking out five straight. The Ospreys did not back down though, as they loaded the bases to start their half of the third inning. Milberg was able to get one out that scored a run, before Jack Metzger came in in relief. The Ospreys then hit an RBI single before another sacrifice tied the game at five through three innings.
The Ospreys took their first lead of the game just one-half inning later in the fourth, after reaching on a single and scoring on a wild pitch. They would add another run in the fifth on two straight hits, adding a second on a two out single to lead 8-5 after the fifth inning.
Dartmouth threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases with only one out. They were able to pick up two runs, one on a Nathan Cmeyla fly out and a Brown single, but the Ospreys limited the damage to hold on to an 8-7 lead.
North Florida responded in their half of the sixth, adding four runs on four hits to take a 12-7 lead into the seventh inning. They two runs on lead-off home runs in the seventh and the eighth.
The Big Green would not give up in the top of the ninth, recording two hits and scoring a run when Camden Rush reached on an error for the second time. A walk then loaded the bases but the Ospreys were able to get out of it, defeating the Big Green 14-8 for their fifth straight win.
In addition to Milberg on the mound, Jack Metzger, Tyler Cortland, and Danny Will also pitched for the Big Green. The four pitchers combined for 14 runs on 17 hits, four walks, and ten strikeouts.
The Big Green nearly matched their run total of the year in Saturday's matchup with the Ospreys. They will hope to continue that offensive power tomorrow in the series finale. First pitch for Sunday's game is scheduled for 11 a.m. and you can follow along on ESPN+ or the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
