BIG GREEN LOOK TO CONTINUE EARLY IVY LEAGUE SUCCESS
Following a 4-3 record on their West Coast trip and their first Ivy League series win of the season over Yale, the Big Green will strive to add more wins to their record and reach .500 on the season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Dartmouth baseball team opened Ivy League play at Yale last weekend, dropping the first game but winning the next two to win the series.
Kolton Freeman got the Big Green out to a quick start in game one, knocking a two-run home run in the first inning. The Bulldogs were able to score six unanswered runs though, taking the first game of the doubleheader and the series.
Dartmouth got out to a 2-0 lead in game two, scoring once in each of the first two innings.
Nathan Cmeyla singled in the first inning to put the Big Green on the board and
Jackson Hower extended the lead in the second inning when he scored on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs were able to pull within one run in the fifth, but Dartmouth held on for the win.
In game three, Yale got on the board in the third inning before Dartmouth took the lead on a two-run single by Hower in the seventh inning. They added an insurance run in their half of the ninth inning, to secure the 3-1 victory and win the series.
HEAD COACH BOB WHALEN CONTINUES IMPACT
With the Big Green's 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs on Sunday, Head Coach
Bob Whalen collected his 635-career win. The win pushed him past Penn's Bob Seddon, who coached from 1971-2005, for most wins among Ivy League baseball coaches at one institution.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red, currently sitting at 3-11 and 1-2 in Ivy League play, are coming off a 15-2 win over Princeton to avoid a sweep in their opening series of Ivy League competition. Prior to their win over the Tigers, the Big Red were fighting a three-game losing streak.
Max Jensen has the highest batting average among the Big Red, batting .341 with the third most hits on the team. Jensen is also tied for the most doubles on the team with three. Nathan Waugh leads the Big Red with 18 hits and 13 RBIs. He is also tied for the team high in home runs, hitting three long balls this season.
Carson Mayfield has started five of the Big Red's 14 games this season, having pitched 21.1 innings. Noah Keller, who has started one game and made four relief appearances, has a 4.40 ERA and leads the team with 18 strikeouts, only two more than Mayfield. Keller also leads the Ivy League with 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
Despite only three wins on the season, Cornell posts the third highest batting average in the conference, is the toughest team in the Ivy League to strike out, leads the league in on base percentage, and has played dominantly on defense, leading the league with a .973 fielding percentage.
The Big Red will send Mayfield, Keller, and Ethan Hamill to the mound to face Dartmouth this weekend. Hamill has made two starts for Cornell and is coming off a win in his last appearance against Princeton. In two starts and three relief appearances, Hamill has pitched 20 innings, second on the team, and posts a 5.85 ERA.
STARTING ON THE MOUND…
The Big Green will send
Marco Dumsky,
Devin Milberg, and
Eddie Albert to the mound to face the Big Red.
In three starts this season, Dumsky has combined for 12 innings pitched, giving up seven runs on 13 hits with 16 strikeouts. Dumsky's first start of the season came against Long Beach State, a 3-0 win that saw him pitch 6.1 scoreless innings, scattering two hits while fanning eight.
Milberg will make his team leading fifth start of the season in game two of the doubleheader. He has thrown 15.1 innings, allowing 14 runs on 18 hits. Milberg sits third on the team, behind only Dumsky and
Jack Metzger with 15 strikeouts.
Albert will take the mound for his third start of the season on Sunday, looking to stay atop the league and nation with his low ERA. In three appearances and 15 innings pitched, Albert has only had three runs score, one of which was earned.
LEAVING LAST YEAR IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR
Following a three-win season last year and being picked to finish last in the Ivy League this year, the Big Green are already trending in a positive direction. Despite a slow start, Dartmouth is beginning to find a groove, having gone 6-4 through its last ten games.
They have doubled their win total from last year and tied their Ivy League win total following two come from behind wins at Yale last weekend.
The offense has also seen a spark. Last season, the Big Green scored 158 total runs and collected 135 RBI. Only 15 games into the season, Dartmouth has reached the halfway mark in both those statistics, scoring 78 runs, and collecting 67 RBI.
BIG GREEN STRING TOGETHER IMPRESSIVE PITCHING PERFORMANCES
While the bats have come to life since the early part of the season, the pitchers have also stepped up to secure wins for the Big Green, especially out of the bullpen.
Metzger pitched in two of the three games against the Bulldogs, pitching three innings and collecting the win in the Big Green's 2-1 victory and collecting his conference leading third save in the series finale at Yale.
Shane Bauer has also pitched effectively out of the bullpen, allowing only one run in 2.2 innings of work against Yale.
Albert has made a name or himself in his three appearances for the Big Green this season, allowing only one earned run to rank first in the Ivy League and second in the nation with a 0.60 earned run average.
