Baseball Drops First Two Games of Series at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Green and Big Red played two Ivy League games on Saturday for the second Ivy League series of the season. The Big Red were carried by a grand slam in game one to win 7-5 and followed suit in game two, cruising to a 17-2 victory over the Big Green.

With the two losses, the Big Green fall to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in Ivy League play.

GAME 1: Cornell 7, Dartmouth 5

In game one of the doubleheader, the Cornell Big Red got out to a quick start, adding one run in the first inning and extending their lead in the second inning. After loading the bases in the second inning and bringing one run home after getting hit by a pitch, Nathan Waugh added four runs when he knocked a grand slam to center field.

Dartmouth was able to score four runs of their own in the next half inning, cutting the Big Red's lead to 6-4. Taer Rodriguez scored on a passed ball before Ethan Brown singled to score Camden Rush, and Max Zajec knocked in two runs with a single of his own.

Both the Big Green and Big Red remained off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when Dartmouth was able to pull within one run when Kolton Freeman hit a sacrifice fly.

Cornell added an insurance run in the seventh inning to defeat the Big Green, 7-5.

Marco Dumsky started on the mound for the Big Green, giving up six runs, five earned, on four hits. Dumsky continued to fan batters, collecting five strikeouts in four innings. Mac Burke pitched three innings of relief, giving up only one run on two hits. Clark Gilmore pitched the final inning of relief, giving up one hit in his scoreless frame.

GAME 2: Cornell 17, Dartmouth 2

The Big Red picked up game two right where they left off in game one, getting out to a 7-0 lead before the Big Green were able to get on the board on their way to defeating the Big Green 17-2.

Dartmouth put their two runs on the board in the fifth inning. Jackson Hower drew a walk with the bases loaded to score a run before Ethan Brown came home on a wild pitch. Cornell added ten more runs over the remaining four innings to defeat the Big Green.

Devin Milberg started on the mound for the Big Green. Shane Bauer pitched 2.2 innings of relief, Nate Isler pitched 2.0 innings, and Tyler Cortland and Joseph Chambers eache pitched one inning. The five pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts on the day.
