HANOVER, N.H. --The Dartmouth Big Green rallied from seven runs down to tie the game in the seventh inning, before walking it off on a single off the bat of Zackarie Casebonne to pick up the 10-9 win over the Brown Bears Sunday.
With the win, the Big Green collect the sweep over the Bears and move to 10-16 overall and 5-7 against Ivy League opponents.
Dartmouth started the scoring early, getting out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Elliot Krewson reached on an infield single to score Jackson Hower and Taer Rodriguez.
The Bears immediately responded, scoring three runs in their half of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. They extended their lead to two runs in the fourth. While Dartmouth was able to keep the Bears off the board in the fourth, they continued to add runs to the board, putting runs on the board in the next three straight innings to lead 9-2.
The Big Green created a rally of their own in the seventh inning, scoring their first run when Casebonne singled with the bases loaded to score one. The Big Green kept the bases loaded with no outs for the next five batters, coming within one run on five straight free bases, either by way of walk or hit by pitch.
While Krewson recorded the first out of the inning, he scored the game tying run on his sacrifice ground out scoring Taer Rodriguez and sending the game to the eighth inning, tied at nine.
Both Dartmouth and Brown were able to get runners on base in the eighth inning but the relief pitchers held it down, putting up scoreless frames to send the game to the ninth.
Brown has a runner in scoring position for the second inning in a row, but was unable to bring him home in the ninth inning, leaving the door open for the Big Green to cap the comeback.
Kolton Freeman led off the ninth inning for the Big Green, collecting his 100th career hit to put the winning run on first base. Jackson Hower reached on an error that may have turned two outs, allowing Krewson to collect another sacrifice to advance runners to second and third. The Bears intentionally walked Max Zajec to load the bases, hoping for a double play ball to end the inning but Casebonne had other plans.
While he had a chance with the bases loaded and two outs to take the lead for the Big Green in the seventh inning, he made no mistakes the second time around singling through the right side of the infield to score Freeman and secure the victory for the Big Green.
"Hes one of the most hardest working and most respected kids on the team, he's a team guy all the way through," Head Coach Bob Whalen said after the game about Casebonne. "He struggled early in the weekend offensively and then had a two-strike breaking ball which he had struggled with the past couple of days and really whistled one in an RBI situation and then he had a strikeout when we could have gone ahead late in the eighth. It's only fitting that he got the game winning hit, particularly with two outs in the ninth."
Eddie Albert got the start on the mound for the Big Green, struggling through the first 1.2 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Danny Will and Joseph Chambers each pitched 1.1 innings of relief and each allowed one run.
Shane Bauer was one of only two Big Green pitchers to put up a scoreless line, allowing two walks with one strikeout in 0.2 innings pitched. Devin Milberg allowed two runs on three hits in his one inning of relief, followed by Clark Gilmore who also gave up two runs.
Jack Metzger got the win out of the bullpen for Dartmouth. The right-hander went 2.2 shutout innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out two.
While the Big Green prepare for a midweek match up with Siena before traveling to face Harvard this weekend, Whalen said the difference today and this weekend was Dartmouth's compete level.
Overall, Whalen said, "its just great to be at home and to be able to play well and have an opportunity to win. Today was a great example, the Ivy League weekends, anything can happen, kids work hard all year for these seven weekends and you just have to play as hard as you can and hope things work out."
