LOWELL, Mass. -- The Big Green scored seven unanswered runs, including a Jackson Hower grand slam in the sixth inning to break the tie and lead the Big Green to a 7-2 victory over the UMass Lowell River Hawks.
With the win, the Big Green move to 7-12 on the season and will enter their weekend series with Columbia on a high note.
The River Hawks opened a 2-0 lead on singles in the third inning. The Big Green were able to come back and tie the game in the fifth inning when Zackarie Casebonne hit a sacrifice fly to cut the River Hawks lead in half. Elliot Krewson then reached on an error to keep the inning alive and tie the game.
The Big Green took the lead in the next inning, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. The inning was highlighted by a Hower grand slam to left field that score A.J. DeMastrie, Nathan Cmeyla, and Kolton Freeman to put the Big Green on top, 6-2. Casebonne collected his second RBI of the game two batters later when he singled to score Camden Rush, extending the Big Green's lead to 7-2.
Clark GIlmore made his fourth start of the season, pitching three innings and allowing two unearned runs on four hits and three strikeouts. Nate Isler pitched the fourth inning in relief, pitching out of a bases loaded jam by fanning three straight batters. Danny Will followed in relief and collected the win for the Big Green. Mac Burke, Drew Koenen, and Jack Metzger combined for the final four scoreless innings of relief.
The Big Green will return to action this weekend when they host the Columbia Lions for their first home series of the year. The Big Green and Lions will play a doubleheader on Saturday and close the series at noon on Sunday.
