HANOVER, N.H. -- The Dartmouth Big Green got a boost from Kolton Freeman, who strung together three hits, including the one that sparked the Big Green's partial comeback, in a 7-5 loss to the Princeton Tigers Sunday.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 11-23 overall and 6-12 in the Ivy League.
The Tigers got on the board first, opening a 4-0 lead in the first inning. They scored their first two runs on a double and just when the Big Gren thought they were going to get out of the inning, a two-run, inside the park home run put the Tigers up 4-0. Princeton added runs in the second and fourth innings, to go up 6-0 before Dartmouth was able to push a runner home.
In the fifth inning, the Big Green capitalized on a Princeton error to get their first run on the board. Jackson Hower singled and went to second when Camden Rush singled. A failed pick off attempt on a wild throw into the outfield sent Hower to third, who eventual scored the Big Green's first run when Taer Rodriguez grounded out. The Tigers responded in their half of the six inning, making the score 7-1 and re-extending their lead to six.
Dartmouth did not back down though, sparking a mini comeback in the eighth inning. Freeman's second hit off the day led off the eighth inning and after the Big Green loaded the bases, Freeman scored Dartmouth's second run when Luke Carroll was hit by the pitch. Hower then singled to score another run before Rush and Rodriguez each pushed runs home on ground outs, bringing the Big Green within two headed into the ninth inning.
Freeman led off the Big Green half of the ninth with a single, hoping to start momentum like he did in the eighth. The Big Green were not able to capitalize though, falling to the Tigers 7-5 in the series finale.
Eddie Albert got the ball to start for Dartmouth and took the loss as he only pitched one inning. Jack Metzger was a bright spot for the Big Green, coming out of the bullpen and throwing six innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on five hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Clark Gilmore and Nate Isler pitched the final two innings for the Big Green, combining to scatter three hits in their scoreless frames.
The Big Green will welcome Merrimack to town on Wednesday, hoping to get back in the win column and swing momentum in their favor prior to their final Ivy League series next weekend on the road against Penn.
