Dartmouth Drops 10 Inning Thriller with Merrimack

HANOVER, N.H. --The Dartmouth Big Green fell behind and powered back against the Merrimack Warriors but were not able to complete the full comeback, falling 7-6 in 10 innings Wednesday.

With the loss, the Big Green fall to 11-24 on the season.

The Big Green and Warriors were both held scoreless through the first third of the game, but the Warriors found rhythm in the fourth, plating six runs to take a 6-0 lead over the Big Green.

In the fifth inning, Dartmouth's offense clicked as it got on the board thanks to Max Zajec's first home run of the year, a two-run shot to right field to make the score 6-4.

The Big Green would respond again in the sixth when Nathan Cmeyla ripped a two run single to cut the Warriors lead to four. Zajec delivered again, singling to score Cmeyla, collect his third RBI of the day, and make it a one run game.

Both teams stayed off the board in the seventh inning, but Kolton Freeman had his own plans in the eighth, tying the game with his team leading eighth home run of the season.

The Warriors and Big Green each had chances in the ninth. Merrimack had runners on first and second with one out but a diving play and flip of the glove by Camden Rush at second base allowed Elliot Krewson at shortstop and Max Zajec at first to turn the double play and give the Big Green an opportunity to walk off.

A walk and hit by pitch in the Dartmouth half off the ninth inning put runners on first and second with no outs. Two base running mishaps though got the Warriors out of the inning and sent the game to extras.

On only the fourth pitch of the tenth inning, the Warriors went ahead on a home run to left field. Despite having two runners on once more in the tenth, the Big Green were not able to send them home, falling 7-6 to the Warriors.

Nate Isler got the start on the mound for the Big Green and pitched effectively through two innings, allowing three hits, one walk, and fanning three. Clark Gilmore pitched the next five outs, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks. Shane Bauer made a brief appearance before being replaced by Eddie Albert who allowed one hit and fanned one batter in 1.2 innings pitched.

Brady Chappel shined on the mound and kept them in it in the middle frames, going 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings and striking out two.

Danny Will collected one out via strikeout before Drew Koenen wrapped up the final 1.2 innings for the Big Green.

Dartmouth will now shift its focus to this weekend where they will travel to Penn for the final Ivy League series of the year. The Big Green and Quakers will play a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.

Following the three game series with Penn, the Big Green will return home to wrap up their season against the Maine Black Bears.
