FINAL IVY LEAGUE SERIES ON DECK
Following a thrilling ten inning midweek against Merrimack, the Big Green return to Ivy League play, their final conference series of the year. Dartmouth will look to bring the energy and continue to build on their ability to comeback and score late in games.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green hosted the Merrimack Warriors on Wednesday, hoping to get on the right track prior to their final Ivy League series this weekend against Penn.
Â
Despite falling behind 6-0, the Big Green powered back thanks to three RBIs from
Max Zajec including a two-run home run, a two-run single by
Nathan Cmeyla, and a solo home run by
Kolton Freeman in the eighth inning.
Â
Dartmouth turned a stellar double play in the top of the ninth to give it an opportunity to walk off, but two base running mishaps sent the game to the tenth inning. Merrimack wasted no time retaking the lead, hitting a solo home run on only the fourth pitch of the inning to put them up 7-6.
Â
The Big Green had two runners on with only one out but were unable to push runs across, falling to the Warriors, 7-6.
Â
SCOUTING PENN
The Penn Quakers, sitting at 18-21 overall and 9-9 in Ivy League play, have a chance to clinch a spot in the Ivy League tournament this weekend.
Â
The Quakers are coming off a series victory over Harvard on the road and a decisive 13-1 victory over Delaware State in their nonconference midweek matchup Tuesday. This matchup with the Big Green will be the Quakers first time home since April 17.
Â
Penn is led offensively by Wyatt Henseler. His .362 batting average, 55 hits, 19 home runs, 44 RBI, and 25 walks drawn lead the team. Henseler's 19 long balls leads the Ivy League and ranks him 15
th in all the nation. He also ranks first in the Ivy League in three other categories.
Â
Ryan Taylor's .294 batting average ranks him fourth on the team. He has 29 RBI on the season and is in a three-way tie for most doubles on the team this season with 10.
On the mound, Cole Zaffiro and Ryan Dromboski lead the way, each making ten starts this season. In Zaffiro's 54.2 innings pitched, he has struck out 65 batters to lead the team, having an opponent batting average of .223. In Dromboski's ten starts, he has pitched 45.1 innings, dealing 23 walks and fanning 53.
Â
In relief, Penn is led by Eli Trop and Will Tobin who have each made 15 relief appearances. Trop's 3.63 earned run average in 17.1 innings is good for fourth best on the team. In addition to his 15 releif appearances, Tobin has also made two starts, throwing 24.1 innings.
Â
CLOSING OUT IVY LEAGUE PLAY WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY SPOILER
The Big Green's trip to Penn will wrap up this season's Ivy League play. Currently sitting at 6-12 in conference, Dartmouth has already tripled their conference wins from last year.
Â
With Penn needing at least two wins but also relying on Cornell and Princeton to lose games in order to make the Ivy League tournament, the Big Green have a chance to spoil the Quakers playoff hopes and end their conference play on a high note, further bouncing back from last year's disappointing season.
