AMHERST, MASS. - Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 12-10 triumph over UMass on Saturday afternoon.Â
The Big Green wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three goals in the first 6 minutes of play. UMass tacked on two goals in the first quarter, but Dartmouth's explosive offense gave themselves an 8-3 lead going into halftime.Â
"I'm really proud of how the team played for three quarters. There will be a lot for us to learn from going into our next game and really trying to find a complete game for Dartmouth lacrosse. I'm excited about what this team is capable of and I think this is only the start, and we'll take the next couple days to really get better and start to focus on UNH." Dartmouth head coach Alex McFadden said.Â
Boo DeWitt and Catherine Erb stood out for the Big Green, leading the team with three goals each. Samantha Bennett showed off her offensive and defensive strengths with two goals, two caused turnovers, and four ground balls.Â
Bennett and DeWitt fought a back-and-forth battle with UMass, trading goals throughout the third quarter. UMass cut the deficit down to four points, entering the fourth quarter with a close score of 11-7.Â
In the first five minutes of the final quarter, the Minutewomen scored three goals to bring the score to 11-10. With less than four minutes left, Erb launched a goal, assisted by Christensen, into the net and secured their first win of the year.Â
The Big Green will be back in action when they host New Hampshire for their home opener on Wednesday.Â
