HANOVER, N.H - Dartmouth women's lacrosse had a historic home opener on Tuesday afternoon, defeating New Hampshire 23-4 at Scully-Fahey Field.Â
The Wildcats opened the game by scoring a goal in the first minute, but the Big Green quickly returned the favor when Annie Small scored back-to-back goals within 40 seconds of each other. Dartmouth didn't take its foot off the gas after this, scoring 13 more goals and holding New Hampshire to only 3 by the end of the first half.Â
As the game clock hit 8:29 in the third quarter, Maya Kendall got into position for her 24th face-off of the game. When the whistles blew and the ball landed into the mesh of her stick, she had broken the Ivy League record for most draw controls in a single game.Â
Kendall, who finished with 22 draw controls, also surpassed the previous program record of 17, which was last set by Kathryn Giroux in 2019.Â
"I was really excited. Credit to my teammates, they get me better in practice every day. Alex and Rachel, my coaches, really prepped me for this," Kendall said. "Something I've been wanting to do for a while, so that's exciting."Â
The Big Green continued to keep pressure on the Wildcats, tacking on eight goals in the second half. It wasn't until the last 2 minutes of the game when New Hampshire put its final goal in the net to bring the score to 23-4.Â
Ryan Hapgood had a fantastic start to her collegiate career, recording four goals in her Dartmouth debut. Maja Desmond also shined in her senior year home opener, recording four goals as well.Â
Dartmouth head coach Alex McFadden said she was excited about what the Big Green was able to accomplish, noting the amount of first goals and the return of Hapgood after her season-ending injury last year.Â
"We're just excited to see a lot of contributions from a lot of different players. That's what we need going forward, the more players who are going to step up and make plays, the better off we will be later down the road." McFadden said.Â
The Big Green will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to face Bryant.Â
