WORCESTER, Mass. – The Dartmouth men's lightweight rowing team enjoyed strong success at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, highlighted by the varsity four capturing a silver medal, with the varsity eight finishing fifth overall – less than three seconds behind a spot on the podium.
The varsity eight was neck-and-neck all day, both in its heat and grand final. The Big Green finished third in the heat to qualify for the final, and Dartmouth for the IRA National Championship.
"Sprints is the Ivy League championship, but it's also our qualifier for the national championship – place top seven in the varsity to make sure we get to go to the IRA," said head coach
Trevor Michelson. "Really good race this morning; really happy with those guys."
In the afternoon grand final, the varsity eight was in the thick of things until the very end, finishing with a time of 5:55.315. That was fifth, behind Harvard (5:46.739), Cornell (5:49.285), Princeton (5:52.793) and Penn (5:54.747) while in front of MIT (5:59.863).
"Really gutsy race from really difficult conditions in lane six," said Michelson. "They fought really hard; leads changed every stroke. They're gutted, but it was a great performance."
The second varsity eight fell a little short in its morning heat, posting a time of 6:07.447, which was fourth, one spot from qualifying for the grand final. In the petite final, Dartmouth came in second with a time of 6:03.474, only trailing Georgetown (6:01.180) and ahead of MIT (6:09.886) and Navy (6:11.222).
The varsity four had one race, the grand final in the afternoon, and it was a memorable one. The Big Green came in second (7:00.700), narrowly missing gold as Harvard finished in 6:59.379.
"We kicked off the afternoon with our varsity four, featuring five seniors," said Michelson. "They were closing towards the end on Harvard, but couldn't quite get them and lost by two seats. But just a huge accomplishment for those guys, the first lightweight medal for Dartmouth at the sprints [in over a decade]. Really proud of those guys; really happy that they got to close their last sprints like that."
The Big Green will return to action in two weekends at the IRA National Championship in Camden, N.J.
"We're really excited about the next two weeks, making progress and we'll see if we can land on the medals dock at the national championship," said Michelson. "
