Where are you from and whom did you row for prior to Dartmouth? I grew up in Powell, OH, and I walked on to the program here.
Why did you choose Dartmouth and the Dartmouth Rowing
Program? Dartmouth gives me the opportunity to learn about anything I want and be around bright kids who want to make a difference in the world.
I joined the rowing team because I was looking to get back into sports after concussions cut short my high school football career. I had heard it was feasible to walk on and contribute to the rowing team, so a couple days into freshman orientation, I made my way down to see the Connecticut, which quickly convinced me that rowing was something I wanted to do.
What do you participate in at Dartmouth, apart from rowing? I organize floor movies and dinners and I shoot a fair amount of pool. I'm also a computer science and econ tutor. Next fall/winter I'll be looking to get involved with some compsci research.
Tell me something about yourself that might come as a surprise to your teammates. When I was four, I didn't know what the word "vanilla" meant. I had a bit of an imagination, so I began associating "vanilla" with the image of a red-haired, middle-aged woman who snatched little kids using a butterfly net (no joke). Eventually, my parents figured out why I was so afraid of the word. My dad had me smell and taste some vanilla extract (which, as it were, did not try to kidnap me) and everything was fine.
What is your best memory from rowing at Dartmouth so far? Carrying the boat while stepping in the shin-deep, near-freezing water on the dock in Jersey after beating Rutgers and BU
What are your plans for the future? Probably computer programming. Video games are nearing the point of bringing virtual reality into the household. I'd be really proud to help make that happen.
