Men's Lightweight Rowing
at Cornell
Q & A with William Peters
Why Dartmouth?
A professor at my community college told me about Dartmouth 2 years ago. I'd didn't even know what it was at the time let alone think I could attend such a selective school. He encouraged me to visit the campus, which I did in March of 2011. I immediately fell in love with the place and my girlfriend at the time told me that she would leave me if I did not apply. When I asked why, she answered, "Because you never looked at me with such desire as you did Dartmouth." I never once thought I'd be accepted, but I was. In the Army, I learned to always strive to be better. Dartmouth provides me with the opportunity to maximize my potential in ways in never dreamt.
How long have I been rowing and what sparked my interest?
I started rowing in Fall '12 for the first time. I walked onto heavyweight after John Strizich talked to me about it. I switched to lightweight because of my height at the end of the fall. I never expected to be participating in any sports here at Dartmouth, it just kind of happened. I'm glad it did. I love being a part of a team and the D150's are an excellent group of guys. Rowing keeps me strong, healthy and focused and has been an amazing new element in my life, especially at age 26.
Have I won any awards?
When I was 14, I won tickets to see Pearl Jam, but the radio station took them away because I wasn't 21. I stopped listening to WBCN after that. They aren't on the air anymore so I regard that as a success.
Something interesting about yourself?
I was an infantryman in the active army from 2005-06. I was in Iraq for 15 months where I served as a machine gunner and a team leader. I spent the summer of 2008 at West Point instructing cadets in the usage of machine guns and heavy weapon systems.
When I returned to Boston from active duty, I joined the Mass. National Guard and worked at Bunker Hill Community college where I was a writing tutor and also helped veterans enroll and get their benefits.
