Q&A with Catie Beckhorn
Why Dartmouth?
For me, choosing Dartmouth was very much about following my gut instinct. I had always pictured myself going to a small, rural, liberal arts school in New England. Beyond academic rigor, I wanted a school with a strong community among students and faculty, a down-to-earth and somewhat outdoorsy student body, and lots of school spirit! After conversations with fiercely loyal alumni and current students, I was convinced that I had to come visit Hanover. As cheesy as this sounds, when I visited Dartmouth, it felt like something “clicked” and I knew that there was no place I’d rather spend the next four years.
How long have you been rowing and what interested you about rowing?
I had never rowed before I got to Dartmouth. I had participated in sports all through high school and knew I wanted to continue playing sports in college, although I wasn’t sure what sport. I really wanted to try something new, so on a bit of a whim, I walked onto the crew team this fall. I’m absolutely loving it so far!
What is something about you that might come as a surprise to your teammates?
I have bicycle toured across two continents (America and Europe). Also, I have been playing the piano for 12 years (but even after all that time, I’m still not that great!).
What extracurricular activities are you involved in on campus?
I am currently part of the Dartmouth Outing Club. Although I haven’t actually gone on any trips yet (other than freshman trips), I’m looking forward to doing so over the next four years. Also, I hope to go on a few rides with the Dartmouth Cycling Club in the warmer months.
What are your future plans, if any?
As of right now, I am thinking about doing pre-med. However, I’m open to taking classes in many different departments and exploring my academic options a bit more before I decide for sure.
