at Brown

2/25/10
Now in his fourth season, Gherst joined the Dartmouth staff in 2006 after spending six years as the head men’s coach at the University of Rhode Island. In 2004 Gherst led Rhode Island to the best season in its 45 year history, medaling at the New England Championships, ECAC Invitational, and taking the program’s first ever trip to the Henley Royal Regatta.
A 1997 graduate of the University of Vermont with a degree in political science, Gherst began his coaching career at his alma mater as the novice women’s coach from 1997-1998 before becoming the head coach from 1998-2000.
A former coxswain at both UVM and the Pennsylvania Athletic Club, Gherst won numerous medals on the collegiate and national level and competed at the 1996 World Championships in Strathclyde, Scotland.
Formerly the varsity assistant, Gherst is in his first year as coach of the freshmen team. In addition to his responsibilities as freshmen coach, Gherst’s background in coxing allows him to work closely with the Big Green coxswains in developing all aspects of their role both on and off the water.
When not in the office or down at the boathouse coaching, Gherst enjoys running, rock climbing, and skiing.
