Dartmouth Women's Lacrosse Makes History Against Maryland
March 19, 2005
HANOVER, N.H. -- The 13th matchup between Dartmouth and Maryland in women's lacrosse proved to be the charm for the Big Green on Saturday.
The No. 8 Big Green used two goals each by three different players, defeating No. 9 Maryland, 10-8, for the first time in school history. The series began in 1993 as the nine-time NCAA champion Terrapins won 12 straight games, including five at Dartmouth.
Senior Katieanne Christian (Agawam, Mass.), sophomore Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored twice as Dartmouth recovered from a 4-1 deficit in the opening half.
"Maryland's a team that can get a run of goals on you," said Dartmouth coach Amy Patton. "That's their style and their tradition. But I never felt that we were out of it. I thought we just had to settle down. We looked really nervous at the beginning."
With two goals from Delia Cox and singles from Jessica Dorney and Annie Collins, Maryland (5-3) held a 4-1 lead with 12:54 gone in the game.
But Dartmouth (3-0) scored four unanswered goals, including Szefi's first with 16 seconds left in the half, for a 5-4 lead at the break.
The Big Green had three more to start the second half. Barry found the net at the 19:54 mark, before Christian and Szefi tallied for an 8-4 lead with 15:48 to play.
Cox scored about two-and-a-half minutes later, but Dartmouth answered twice on goal s by Christian and Barry, good for a 10-5 Big Green lead with 9:36 to play.
Although Maryland poured in three goals in a four-minute stretch that ended with 3:50 to go, the Terps couldn't get closer. Junior goalkeeper Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) had five of her seven saves in the second half as Dartmouth ran its record to a perfect 3-0.
Sophomore Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) had a strong outing for Dartmouth, adding two assists to go along with one goal, while junior Annie Leibovitz (Boulder, Colo.), senior Sarah Sanborn (Owings Mills, Md.) and sophomore Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) rounded out the Big Green's scoring.
It was the first time in Dartmouth history that the Big Green came into the matchup ranked ahead of Maryland in the IWLCA national poll.
"I felt like in the second half, we ran our plays," said Patton. "I truly think it's about basics. We were throwing and catching well, and moving well. That's the game."
For Maryland, Cox had four goals, while goalkeeper Kirah Miles made 12 saves. Dartmouth held a 28-19 lead in shots, and a slight edge in ground balls at 28-26.
After starting the season with three straight home games, the Big Green is on the road for three, beginning Tuesday, March 22 at James Madison. Dartmouth opens the Ivy League season on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27, visiting Yale and Columbia.
