Douthett Leads Dartmouth Women's Lacrosse to Victory over Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) had a career-high four goals and added one assist, as the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team edged Yale, 9-8, in Ivy League action Saturday afternoon.
Douthett scored two of her game-high four goals late in the second half as Dartmouth improved to 5-0 on the year. That matches the start of the 1997 team that went on to a 10-4 record.
With the Big Green clinging to a 7-6 lead, Douthett scored her third of the game with 10:32 on the clock for an 8-6 advantage. Yale's Lara Melnicker answered three minutes later, and at the 6:20 mark, Douthett again gave Dartmouth some breathing room at 9-7.
Yale's Allesandra Croffy had the game's final goal with 58 seconds left in regulation.
"Whitney had an outstanding afternoon," said head coach Amy Patton, now in her 13th season. "She continues to play with a lot of poise and confidence for us, and she was the difference today."
Patton is also getting solid play from freshman Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) who has already made a case for Ivy rookie of the year honors in just five games. Barry is averaging two goals per game for Dartmouth, and potted two more against Yale.
The game was a seesaw battle throughout. Yale held a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes to go in the first half, but the Big Green scored four of the last five before halftime for a 5-4 lead at the break.
Barry and Douthett scored during that stretch for Dartmouth before junior Casey Hazel (Reisterstown, Md.) found the net with 1:35 on the clock.
That was the difference as the two teams matched goals in the second half. After Dartmouth's Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Barry scored, Yale's Croffy and Sarah Driscoll responded, making it 7-6 with 16:23 to go.
That set up Douthett's heroics and gave Dartmouth a 1-0 record in Ivy League play. The Elis fell to 2-4 on the year, 0-1 in the conference.
In the nets, Dartmouth junior Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) had 11 saves. Lonnie Sarnell made seven for the Bulldogs.
The Big Green has another Ivy League contest on tap Sunday, traveling to Columbia for a 1 o'clock faceoff.
