Dartmouth Women's Lacrosse Blasts BC, 17-2
May 4, 2005
HANOVER, N.H. -- A week after suffering its first loss of the season, the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team blasted Boston College, 17-2, as sophomore Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) scored four goals.
No. 4 Dartmouth allowed the unranked Eagles to score the first goal of the game, but then answered with seven straight for a commanding 7-1 lead with 1:42 left until the half.
BC's Shauna Culhane scored with 59 seconds remaining in the first half for a 7-2 lead at the break, before Dartmouth ripped off 10 unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes.
The win gave Dartmouth a perfect 9-0 record in regular season home games, the first time that's happened since 1999.
"It was a great way to bounce back," said Dartmouth coach Amy Patton whose team improved to 14-1. "I thought we looked sharper today. Things weren't going our way in that first 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and I was really impressed that we didn't get frustrated. We let the game come to us."
Pittman had another strong day for Dartmouth. In addition to her four goals -- two in each half -- she had six ground balls. Big Green goalkeeper Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) made 10 saves before junior Kelly Roy (Sykesville, Md.) came on for the final six minutes.
Dartmouth's top scoring threat, Katieanne Christian (Agawam, Mass.) had two goals. On the season, she's netted 50 goals, good for a tie for seventh in the Dartmouth record book. She's seventh in career goals with 116 and tied for 10th with 132 career points.
The Big Green outshot BC, 42-18, and also had the edge in ground balls, 40-23, as the Eagles went to 10-6 on the year. "We looked poised, we looked sharp," added Patton, "and our defense really stepped it up."
Dartmouth has one regular season game remaining on Sunday. The Big Green travels to No. 2 Duke in a game that could have an impact on the NCAA seedings.
The Big Green won the NCAA automatic bid by claiming the 2005 Ivy League title and is expected to host a first round matchup on Thursday, May 12. The second round will be played on Sunday, May 15, and the bracket will be unveiled on Sunday, May 8, at 9 p.m.
"The game has a lot of tournament implications, and we need a real, tough game right now," said Patton. "Duke's very good. I've seen them play and I think we match up well."
