Philadelphia - The Dartmouth women's soccer team took an early lead but could not hold it for the win as Penn stormed back to take a 2-1 victory this evening at Rhodes Field.
Dartmouth falls to 3-8-1 (1-2 Ivy) while Penn improves to 9-2-1 (3-0 Ivy).
“We got a good early goal from Ali Hubbard and did well for the first 10 minutes by then Penn picked it up and we really started to struggle,” said Head Coach Angie Hind. “That's the best Penn side I have seen in my time at Dartmouth.”
Dartmouth sophomore Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) showed that the Big Green had come to play when she scored off a feed from freshman Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the third minute to give her team an early 1-0 lead.
The Big Green kept the offensive pressure on and thwarted several counterattacks by the Quakers. Penn managed to answer back; however, when Jessica Funello scored her eighth goal of the season off a header from a corner kick by Jess Rothenheber in the 37th minute.
Penn held an 8-3 advantage in shots in the first period and the teams went into the half tied at 1-1.
The Quakers carried the momentum from their late-half surge into the second, pressuring the Big Green's defense from the start. Their persistence paid off when Rothenberger found the back of the net off a feed from Sarah Friedman at 64:37 to give Penn a 2-1 lead that it would not relinquish.
Despite filling the field with strikers late in the game, Dartmouth mustered just one shot for the half.
“We tried to push to get another goal late but Penn did a good job of killing the game off,” noted Hind.
Ultimately, Penn outshot Dartmouth 14-4 in the contest. Big Green junior goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) had four saves - two in each half, while the Quakers' Sara Rose made two stops.
Dartmouth is back in action next Saturday, Oct. 20 when it hosts defending Ivy champs Columbia at 4:30 p.m. at Burnham Field.
