Cambridge, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team outshot Harvard 22-17 but a late first half goal by Megan Merritt led the Crimson to a 1-0 win today.
Dartmouth fell to 3-9-2, 1-3-1 Ivy with the loss while Harvard moved to 10-4-1, 3-2 Ivy.
“We were great today I was so pleased and the score in no way reflected the game,” said Head Coach Angie Hind. “Our possession, organization and attempts were great and we created many more scoring chances than we have been but just couldn't get the ball into the back of the net.”
The Crimson outshot the Big Green 10-7 in the first half with the biggest shot coming from Merritt in the 37th minute. Dartmouth appeared to have the ball cleared but a misplay by the defense made way for the lucky strike by Merritt.
Dartmouth came out and dominated the second half with 15 shots to Harvard's seven, spending most of the 45 minutes in the Crimson's defensive half. The Big Green had several near misses from freshman Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.), who led her team with six shots, and sophomores Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.).
Dartmouth battled to the end and senior back Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill.) nearly tied it in the last minute but sent the ball just past the post. Sack and Goldstein each had four shots on the day while Goldstein had a team-best two shots on goal.
Hind was quick to praise the play of sophomore Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) who got the start in midfield and played “her best game in a Dartmouth jersey.”
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) had six saves in goal on the rainy day while Lauren Mann had four stops for Harvard.
The Big Green returns to Hanover for its final home game of the season when it faces Cornell at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Burnham Field. Dartmouth will honor its four seniors prior to the contest.
