New Haven, Conn. - Dartmouth's long range sniper Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif.) was at it again tonight, scoring the game-winning goal from 25 yards out in the 85th minute as the Big Green women's soccer team topped Yale, 1-0.
The critical road victory gives new life to the Big Green who improves to 3-7, 1-1 Ivy League, dropping the Bulldogs to 6-5 (1-1 Ivy) and snapping their five-game winning streak.
"This was a huge win for us against a good Yale team," said Head Coach Angie Hind. "We worked well and hard together and got yet another great goal from Maggie."
While Yale held a 14-8 shot advantage, Goldstein capitalized on a late direct kick, burying the ball in the top left corner for her second game-winning goal of the year. All four of the sophomore's goals this season have been from long distance - outside the 18-yard box.
Yale also held an 8-2 lead in corner kick opportunities, but the Dartmouth defense and goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) were poised to clear out the Bulldogs each time.
The Bulldogs made a late offensive stand, getting off two shots in the 89th minute. Kate Macauley had her shot blocked at 89:10 and Mary Kuder's rebound attempt went out of bounds. The Big Green held control off the ensuing goal kick to earn its first Ivy win of the season.
Goldstein and classmate Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) had two shots each to pace Dartmouth. Yale's Macauley and Maggie Westfal each got off three shots to lead the Bulldogs' attack. Susan Starr and Ayana Sumiyasu split time evenly in goal for Yale, combining for three saves.
Peak finished with three saves in the game including two back-to-back stops early in the second half. Senior Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill.) and junior Emily Forline (Bethesda, Md.) did a nice job patrolling the Dartmouth defensive end to help Peak earn the shutout.
The Big Green has a quick turnaround before its next game when it heads to Boston University for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off on Monday, Oct. 8.
"That will be a challenge for us to get ready for a good BU team on Monday, but we are progressing and finding some players and combinations that can do good things for us," said Hind.
