Boston, Mass. - Just two days removed from a hard-fought win at Yale, the Dartmouth women's soccer team was back at it to take a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Boston University.
There was plenty of offense to go around as the teams combined for 26 shots, but each could muster only one goal in the tie. Dartmouth moves to 3-7-1 while Boston University is now 5-5-2.
From the solid play in goal by senior Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) all the way up to the attacking front line, Dartmouth put forth a team effort in the 110 minute contest.
“I was pleased with the way we competed and out level of fitness. We grew stronger as the game went on and that's a compliment to our players,” said Head Coach Angie Hind.
The Terriers held a slight 6-5 shot advantage in the first half and their final shot of the period was the big one as Casey Brown took a pass from Mara Osher to beat Webb in the far corner from close range in the 40th minute.
Boston held a 1-0 lead through halftime but the Big Green got to work right away in the second half. After a pair of missed shots - one saved and one wide - sophomore midfielder Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) came up big, scoring her first collegiate goal to tie the game in the 56th minute. Quick, who had the assist on the game-winner against BU last season, made a nice run into the box and slid the ball into the far left side of the goal past Christina Reuter.
Solid goalkeeping carried both teams through the remainder of regulation and Webb made a nice play in the 75th minute to save a header by Taleen Dimirdjian to keep the Big Green alive. Dartmouth junior Caitlin MacDonald (Pleasanton, Calif.) nearly won it in the 89th minute but Reuter made a big save to force overtime.
The Big Green outshot the Terriers 3-2 in the first overtime period and had the only real threats to end the game. Quick nearly nailed the winner at 97:49 when she hit the post and freshman Meagan Tibbo (Ottowa, Ont.) was there for the follow-up but her shot went high, Sophomore Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif.) has a chance to win it in the 100th minute but Reuter came up big again for Boston.
The Terriers had the only shot attempt of the second overtime which proved a defensive stand-off as the teams walked away tied, 1-1 at the end of two extra periods.
Dartmouth's Webb made five saves in goal in her second start of the season and 30th of her career while her counterpart, Reuter, made six for BU.
Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill.) and Emily Forline (Bethesda, Md.) did another solid job on the backline for the Big Green while Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) was a key component in Dartmouth's midfield.
“This was a true team performance and our players really feel good about bringing themselves back from a goal down,” said Hind. “We did a lot to win the game, but we're still happy to come away with the draw.”
“We've got some time to recover before Saturday at Penn but this is a tough two-week road spell for us. Penn will be a test but we'll be ready,” said Hind.
The Big Green and the Quakers, who are 2-0 in Ivy play, will kick things off at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
