Douthett's Three Goals Not Enough Against Penn Women's Lacrosse
Boxscore
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) scored three goals and added two assists, but it wasn't enough to carry the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team past Penn on Saturday. The Quakers won, 13-8.
The critical showdown featured No. 14 Dartmouth with a four-game win streak and one earlier loss in Ivy play. The No. 6 Quakers are off to their best start in school history and at game time, were undefeated in Ivy play.
When the dust settled at Franklin Field, Dartmouth slipped to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in Ivy play. Penn won its eighth straight to jump to 11-1 overall and an unblemished 5-0 in the conference. The victory was also the Quakers' first in the series since April 14, 1991.
The Big Green took a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes, as sophomore Katherine Chiusano (Medford, N.J.) and seniors Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) all connected.
Penn answered with five goals by five different players for a 5-3 lead with 12:26 to go until halftime. About a minute later, Szefi scored her second of three on the afternoon to get the Big Green within one, 5-4, but that was as close as Dartmouth could get.
With six seconds remaining until the break, Penn's Ali DeLuca netted a free position shot for an 8-5 lead, and Penn scored the first two goals of the second half - 13 seconds apart - for a 10-5 margin at 27:32.
Douthett went to work after that, scoring all three of her goals, including two on free position shots.
Penn had a season-high 40 shots, and Dartmouth goalkeeper Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) made eight saves in the opening 46 minutes. Freshman Chelsea Kirk (Hunt Valley, Md.) came on in relief, making four stops.
Douthett, a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation's top player, had her usual all-around game, contributing two grounds balls and two caused turnovers.
Penn can clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title with a win over Princeton on Wednesday, April 18. The Tigers, 19-5 victors over Harvard today, are 6-4 overall and have one loss in the Ivy League at 2-1.
Dartmouth has a pair of home games on tap this week, hosting Harvard on Wednesday, April 18 at 6 pm, followed by Princeton on Saturday, April 21 at 1 pm.
