HANOVER, N.H. -
Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) and
Liz Spence (Concord, Mass.) have been elected co-captains of the 2008 Dartmouth women's lacrosse team.
"Both are incredible leaders and great role models," said head coach
Amy Patton. "I think their strength is that they are opposite personalities and join together to offset and complement each other well."
A first team All-Ivy selection on attack this spring, Barry was Dartmouth's top goal scorer with 37 and third in overall points with 46. With 129 points entering her senior year, she is tied for 14th in career scoring for the Big Green. She also is 10th in career goals with 109.
As a sophomore, Barry was chosen second team All-Ivy and last season she earned honorable mention honors.
"Let's start first with Kristen's intensity, fire and spirit on the field," said Patton. "She's a tenacious competitor who brings a real winning attitude to our team. Next year, she will be the leader of our attack and someone that we will count on to spark the team when we need it."
A three-year letterwinner, Spence anchored the Dartmouth defense in 2007, starting all 16 games. Last year, she started 11 of the Big Green's 18 games as Dartmouth advanced all the way to the NCAA Championship game.
"Liz obviously will be a great defensive captain and leader in our defensive end," said Patton. "She has great poise on the field and is very aware of her teammates' strengths and weaknesses. She brings a positive attitude that will bring this young team back in the thick of things next year."
After four straight trips to the NCAA tournament (2003-2006), the young 2007 squad just missed out, posting a 9-7 overall record and 4-3 in the Ivy League.
Added Patton, "We'll still be considered young in 2008, but in many ways, we will be much more experienced and poised."
