Durham, N.C.. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team continued its grueling non-conference schedule at ACC foe Duke this afternoon and fell, 3-1, to the Blue Devils.
“The schedule so far has been a tough one for us but we are still working hard and believe that we will be better for it,” said Head Coach Angie Hind. “We have had to play some good teams and were not always able to play our game but I am beginning to see us not just compete but play our game in spells, as we did today.”
The Blue Devils (3-1-1) took an early lead when Elisabeth Redmond put the ball in the lower left corner, just beating out Dartmouth goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) in a two-on-one situation at 6:36.
Dartmouth (1-5) responded well despite Duke's early lead and maintained a solid counterattack, though the Blue Devils held an 8-1 shot advantage for the half.
Duke opened things up in the 42nd minute when Redmond struck again off a feed from Kelly Hathorn with little chance for Peak to make a play at it.
Down 2-0 in the second half, Dartmouth came out of the gates attacking, but could not manage to penetrate Duke's final line of defense. Freshman Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a nice play on a breakaway and a good look at the goal, taking on two Duke defenders and goalkeeper Allison Lipsher but her shot in traffic was barely blocked.
The Blue Devils put the game our of reach when Jane Alukonis scored in the 62nd minute off a header to the top left corner.
The Big Green got on the board late in the game after Alexis Euwema (Oak Brook, Ill.) was taken down in the box by a Duke defender in the 82nd minute. Dartmouth senior back Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill.) stepped in to take the penalty kick and nailed a beautiful shot in the top right corner to spoil the shutout bid.
The Blue Devils held on to win 3-1, despite a late surge by the Big Green.
Duke held a 17-6 shot advantage and took eight corners to Dartmouth's three.
Peak finished with four saves in goal while Lipsher had one in 69 minutes of work and Cassidy Powers gave up the penalty goal.
The Big Green kicks off a three-game homestand on Thursday when it hosts Massachusetts under the lights at Burnham Field at 7:00 p.m.
