Hanover, N.H.- The Dartmouth women's soccer team held a commanding advantage in
possession against UMass tonight but the Minutewomen's Britt Canfield
took advantage of a breakaway to secure the 1-0 win for her team with
just over six minutes remaining.
Dartmouth (1-6) held possession for most of the contest and outshot UMass (4-0-1), 11-5.
"We were great tonight in every aspect and to dominate the game and not come away with a win is a bit soul destroying for our team," said Head Coach Angie Hind after the loss. "However, we proved tonight that we are a good team and we can battle and I would be much more concerned if we were not playing well."
The Big Green was dominant in the first half, forcing UMass goalkeeper Kristin Walker to make four of her five saves in the period. Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) sent in a couple well-placed booming shots early, one just past the goalmouth and one saved by Walker.
Rookie Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) was aggressive in the first half as well, forcing Walker to make two saves in two minutes midway through the period.
Dartmouth goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.), who was not tested much, made two saves in the game, including a big stop against Vanessa Patry in the 31st minute.
The second half was slow to get going and despite two-straight corner kicks by UMass in the 55th minute, neither team got a shot off until the Minutewomen's Jenny Roehrig sent one wide at 63:36.
The Big Green had a tremendous opportunity to score after Alexis Euwema (Oak Brook, Ill.) took a corner kick in the 73rd minute. Fellow freshman Katie Davis (San Marina, Calif.) had a shot blocked and despite a flurry of white jerseys in the box, Dartmouth could not get a clear shot off the rebound.
With Dartmouth in command in the UMass defensive half, Patry made a nice play to snag the ball and send it past midfield up to Therese Smith. Smith found a steaking Canfield, who used her speed to just pass the Big Green defense, setting up a one-on-one with Peak. She slid the ball into the lower left corner at 83:19 and there was little that the Dartmouth goalkeeper could do.
The Big Green got its full offensive corps into the game as quickly as it could and put a lot of pressure on the Minutewomen late in the game. Davis sent in a last-second shot that nearly slipped through but was just inches over the goal.
"I told our kids that now we either chuck it or we get back to working hard as we have been," said Hind. "I know our luck will change - they are devastated because they are giving so much but we'll turn the corner."
The Dartmouth women are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 25 when they host Granite State rival New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m.
