College Station, Texas ? The Dartmouth women's soccer team outshot Rice, 11-9, but the Owls goalkeepers made six saves to keep the Big Green off the board while their offense provided plenty of fuel for a 3-0 win.
Dartmouth drops to 0-2 while Rice moves to 1-0-1 on the season.
"This was extremely disappointing for us after playing so well on Friday night [against No. 5 Texas A&M]," said Head Coach Angie Hind. "We did not have the same consistency and composure and we gave away possession too easily."
Samantha Conn got Rice on the board early in the game when she found the back of the net off a feed from Shelley Wong at 6:35. A corner kick by Clory Martin started the action that gave the Owls a lead they would maintain for the rest of the game.
Martin was at the forefront of the action again in the 33rd minute when she beat Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) inside the six to the left side after a pass from Christine Petric.
Rice took a 2-0 lead into halftime, having made the most of its five shot attempts while three of Dartmouth's six shots were saved by Rice's Meghan Erkel.
Both teams picked up the intensity in the second half of what became an increasingly physical contest. The squads would end up with 17 fouls each by the end of the game.
Dartmouth junior Laurel Peak (Reading, Conn.) took over in goal for the second half and for the second time already this season was faced with a penalty kick situation. Rice's Kate Edwards got the better of Peak at 69:04 to provide an insurance goal for her squad.
The Big Green kept on the offensive pressure, but never found the back of the net in the 3-0 loss.
Dartmouth returns home this week to prepare for the 2007 Nike Hypertherm Classic, featuring Cal Poly, Minnesota, Providence and the host Big Green at the brand new Burnham Field soccer facility.
Minnesota and Providence will play on Friday afternoon before Dartmouth takes on Cal Poly at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
"It will be nice for us to be at home this weekend and we are looking forward to having a week of preparation for those games," said Hind.
